Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Williams.
Laura, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Being the oldest sibling out of three girls, I grew up always knowing how to do hair. However, I never imagined this would be my future career. After graduating from high school, I attended the amazing Albany State University to pursue a career in physical therapy. I cheered at ASU for two years and enjoyed myself a little too much. Eventually, I came back home, attended a technical college, and raised my GPA, in order to transfer to Kennesaw State University. While attending KSU, I received the opportunity to work alongside physical therapists, which changed my perspective of pursuing that career choice. It was supposed to be my last year of school, yet I found myself back at the drawing board. What career path was I going to choose? After some soul searching, I realized that throughout the years, I had truly grown to love hairstyling. Not only was it therapeutic, but I got paid for it too! My friend suggested I attend Cosmetology school. After researching schools, I decided to drop out of KSU and attend Beauty School. This was the BEST DECISION I have ever made. Since completing beauty school, I have worked in Bronner Brothers Hair show, New York Fashion Week, and had the opportunity to be the Key Hairstylist for short films. Currently, I am the Head Hairstylist for True Urban Culture Fashion Week based in Atlanta, Georgia. Also, I am excited to say I will be graduating from Atlanta Technical College and receiving my Barbering License on May 11, 2019.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road was definitely not easy, but each struggle birthed a new version of myself. I learned how to balance working as a private nursing assistant, a server at a local restaurant, and a nursing assistant at Emory University Hospital at Midtown. I balanced all of this while attending school full time. I believe that if you stay focused on your goals and aspirations, you will come out on top.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a licensed Master Cosmetologist and soon to be Master Barber. I specialize in styling ALL types of hair. I am a strong advocate for promoting and ensuring healthy hair, as well as enhancing the natural beauty in all women and men. I am skilled in high paced fashion environments, like major fashion shows, and am versed in film set work. I thoroughly enjoy designer shoots and working with diverse groups, that allow me to showcase my creativity through hairstyling.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I was raised by strong women, who instilled the value of being an independent thinker. My mother stressed the importance of choosing a career path that made you happy and was constantly evolving so that there was always an opportunity to grow professionally and personally.
