Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Gallego.
Monica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always loved makeup ever since I was a little girl. I wasn’t allowed to play with makeup, so I would apply Abby powder all over my face and pretend it’s makeup. As grew older, I started doing my friends’ and family’s makeup for special events. But, I didn’t think I was creative enough to make a career out of it. After years of encouragement, I finally took the plunge and enrolled at Industry Makeup Academy, and I’m glad I did. It gave me the confindence that I needed to do makeup professionally. Since completing the program, I have done makeup for special events, fashions shows, photoshoots, a short film, and most recently, a magazine editorial.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest struggle for any artist or business, I believe, is gaining clientele. And also, I’m an extremely shy person, so it was a struggle to put myself out there. There are a lot of talented makeup artists in Atlanta and you can’t help but compare sometimes and get discouraged. My advice is to focus on what you do best and remind yourself why you love what you do.
what should we know about Monica Gallego Makeup? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in clean makeup looks. My go-to is the no-makeup look. However, I do love doing bold lips and soft smokey eyes.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Be professional, be punctual and continue honing your craft. Take as many workshops as you can. You can never learn too much.
