Conversations with the Inspiring Sarah Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Williams.

Sarah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been active my whole life. I’ve run competitively since I was 5 years old, running in both high school and college. Post collegiately, I was training for the Olympic Trials in the marathon. It was during this period that I went through 7 stress fractures in two years and made the decision to hang up my running shoes. I had always been super skinny from so much running (100+ mile weeks) and I decided, I wanted to put on some muscle. I did Crossfit and my own lifting at a local gym and 4 years later, I did my first figure competition. During this time, I left my corporate gig and became a full time trainer with Biggest Loser Resort. Fast forward 2 more years and I moved to Atlanta, got involved with Crossfit and began distance running again. Now, I have more balance than I’ve ever had before and I’ve completed and won numerous ultra marathons with only running one day a week. Crossfit has helped keep me injury free and given me the speed and endurance to do ultras on one day a week of dedicated run training.

There are several things that I love about CFEC that makes it unique. One of course is the people. Everyone is extremely supportive and welcoming. Second is the programming. There is a linear strength program that focuses on the main barbell movements. Third, is the variety of exercises. It is not an endless repeat of burpees, box jumps and kettlebell swings. We do other exercises like heel claps, caving ladders and stretcher carries.

I love helping people to reach their goals through a combination of Crossfit and nutrition. A healthy lifestyle is more than just working out. It is fueling your body with the proper nutrients to nourish the body and provide the fuel to live life to the fullest.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. During my distance runner days and even after that I struggled with anorexia, bulimia and orthorexia. I took everything to the extreme which is eventually what led to many of my injuries. Not only did I go vegan, I went raw vegan then fruitarian. I struggled with bulimia. The thing that finally helped me gain control was finding balance. Balance in my workouts, diet and life.

My advice would be find balance. Be passionate but don’t be one dimensional. It’s ok to have other interests in hobbies.

what should we know about CrossFit East Cobb? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I do several things, I’m the head coach at CrossFit East Cobb where we focus on basic barbell movements, longer wods/workouts and a variety of unique exercises you won’t find at other gyms. I focus on helping people reach their goals through nutrition and functional fitness.
