Conversations with Kathryn Walker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Walker.

Hi Kathryn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a 20-year-old college student, I discovered a love and passion for learning how to bake from scratch and decorate cakes. One day after coming home for the summer from Kennesaw State University, I was craving dessert and decided I wanted to make myself something. I searched online, found a recipe for cookie dough cheesecake bars, and scrounged up some money to go buy the ingredients. I was surprised at how well the bars turned out, and my interest in baking was instantly sparked. That Christmas, I asked my parents for a Kitchen Aid mixer and dove headfirst into learning everything I could about the science of baking and different cake decorating techniques. I graduated from college in 2014, started my career in social work, got married, and had children. All the while, I continued making cakes and desserts on the side, mostly for family and close friends and worked on improving my techniques and skills. After 8 years of baking being my “side hustle”, I finally decided to obtain all of my licensing and officially start my business, Kreative Cakes by Kathryn, LLC, in the spring of 2020.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. It took years for me to perfect my craft and to feel confident enough in myself to step out and actually start a business. Cake decorating takes a lot of time and money, and it can be challenging to juggle with having a family, a career, and other responsibilities. It has also not been easy learning the business side of everything, but I’m continuing to push forward and gain as much knowledge as I can in order to be successful.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in custom, made from scratch cakes and desserts for any occasion such as weddings, birthdays, and special events, I am known for making cakes that taste as good as they look, and I pride myself in making things that are not just beautiful but that people really want to eat. I have spent years testing and developing my recipes, and I use quality ingredients to produce the best product. I believe one of the things that set me apart, in addition to taste, is my presentation. My style is very clean, precise, and elegant. I also work as a foster care and adoptions social worker and am passionate about making a difference in the lives of children.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
My parents describe me as an inquisitive child that was always curious and wanted to learn. I actually grew up watching my mom bake and decorate cakes but never showed any interest in baking until I was an adult. As a child, I took dance lessons for over ten years and was in band and color guard in high school. Dancing and music were actually my first passions.
