Today we’d like to introduce you to Percy Johnson.
Hi Percy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born in Hampton, Virginia to a military father and a schoolteacher mother. I moved to Georgia in 1995, where I grew up in the city of Stone Mountain. I always had a knack for performing, my parents took notice of that and enrolled me into the performing arts magnet program. It was there I was introduced to the arts formally.
Fast forward, after graduating from high school, I enlisted in the US Navy, where I served for six years. Upon my honorable discharge from the military, I started performing stand up comedy and performing theater locally in the DMV area. I moved back to GA in 2018 to be near family and; to immerse myself in Atlanta’s ever-growing entertainment industry. I’m addition to performing stand-up, I create online comedy content for social media. (i.e. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter) Due to COVID, I haven’t recently traveled for comedy or been in clubs. Until such a time, I still create and perform online in various virtual comedy platforms.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This hasn’t been the easiest ride by any means. But it has been fulfilling. Like any career path, there are always challenges to be had and sacrifices that are made along the way. But honestly, that’s what makes it worth it. The experience lies in the journey. It’s a testament to the hard work that goes into a career I can be proud of. I respect the process… I may not always enjoy it, but I respect it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an entertainer. I’m a writer, comedian, actor, and online content creator. I would have to say my specialty would be performing live. Seeing how I have a theater background, I love feeding off of an audience. The thrill of hearing, seeing, and feeling their reaction as the show progresses fuels me. Acting on screen, creating online content both of these things are enjoyable to me. But nothing beats a live performance! I’d have to say I’m most proud of the fact that I’m well rounded as an artist. I feel I give myself a great chance to excel in this industry because I don’t limit myself to just one area. I’ll always have a lane because I occupy so many. There is no door I can be shut out of. What sets me apart from others is the fact that my life and experience is my own. Only I can draw from it and create a unique experience that someone else couldn’t.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Life matters to me. Without life, I can’t be creative. I don’t get that opportunity if I don’t wake up in the morning and draw that first breath. I’ll always say that as long as I’m living, I’ll always have an opportunity to do what I love. I have the opportunity to receive love, to give love, and spend time with the people that mean the most to me. As long as I have life, I have the opportunity to inspire and to be inspired by others.
