Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Wow, that can be such a loaded question. Honestly, this stage of my life has been the most uncertain yet fulfilling experience so far. From as far as I can remember, my mother has allowed me to express myself through fashion and experiment with different aesthetics — this led to a passion for make-up, of course. I actually learned and studied different styles of make-up by watching Drag Queens. After attending Jacksonville State University for a few years, I decided to halt my pursuit in journalism to learn about the technical side of the beauty industry, hence my background in cosmetology. Of course, I’ve worked in Corporate America, another experience I’m grateful for, but I craved my own sense of entrepreneurship. In 2020, during a critical point of the fatal pandemic, I was unfortunately laid off and that sparked the will to start my THC friendly company, 420 Cosmetics.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Define smooth (lol). Well, I quickly found out that if you want to go into the beauty industry, specifically make-up, there were so many hidden factors that I didn’t expect to encounter. Production was probably the toughest challenge so far. Every eyeshadow color is custom and handmade. This felt like such an authentic way to start my business until I received a 250+ item purchase order for my first sale. I feel like I didn’t sleep for months but I was able to deliver the order to a very prominent online boutique and it was not only my biggest struggle but greatest blessing.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a small cosmetic business owner based in Birmingham, AL. My company, 420 Cosmetix, is a marijuana-themed make-up line that prides itself on its rich, cannabis infused pigments and edgy aesthetics. All eyeshadows, eyeliners, and lip glosses are custom and handmade with a specific cannabis strain to identify each color or product. We will also be releasing a line of eyelash extensions very soon.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe one of my greatest qualities is my good attitude. I have been told that because of my positive attitude, I inspire others around me to be more creative. Making for wonder business deals and opportunities.
