Today we’d like to introduce you to A’bril Brown.
Hi A’bril, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started doing hair at the age of 10 years old. It was a hobby that I began to learn from watching my mother do hair at home part-time after work on the weekends. After a few years of playing around with it, I began to have people offer to pay me for my talents. Once I became a junior in high school, I knew that I wanted to dig deeper into the industry. I moved to Atlanta to pursue my dreams of being a college girl at Clark Atlanta University just weeks after graduating high school. I began to make a name for myself in college and once I obtained my degree in Business Marketing, I became 100% full-time in my art and the rest became history.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not always been smooth however it has not been extremely rough for me either. I have always found myself in great positions when it comes to this industry. Just as many things in life, it’s not always about what you know it’s about who you know as well. I can say one struggle along the way in my early years was not being licensed. I took it personal to make sure that was something I received because it would give me the extra confidence in my craft. I wanted to be talented and educated together. A lot of people can have a talent but it makes a difference when you specifically take the time to study the education of it. Talent can take you only so far whereas your mindset has no limits.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a traveling celebrity master cosmetologist. I’ve been doing this for years on years now. I specialize in natural haircare including but not limited too color, silk presses, natural weave installs, and the start and maintenance of locs on both men and women. I am most proud of the fact that I started from the bottom with no guide or mentors and have been able to work my way up the latter without handouts. I’m not from Atlanta but became very popular in my field to the point I was able to began to travel around the US and get paid for what I love to do. There are several factors that set me apart from others in this industry such as my attentiveness and fast working skills. I have great time management with my client rotation during my workdays. I am an amazing listener and give the best advice that is always to the best of my knowledge. I know how to cater to individuals really well, which in turn makes you feel like we have known each other our whole lives. You do not just look good once you leave me you actually feel better too.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I took a risk by moving to Atlanta for “college” with all intentions on really being a popular hairstylist. I jumped right into multiple salons without having a proper license to work in them. I risk having a full clientele and deciding to enter school again as a full-time student as well. It was never super “easy”, but one thing about me is I will make it happen. I began my work travels to Los Angeles back in 2018 with only one client that was going to generate only $85. I kept going out there until I figured out my “nitch” and a year later, I was traveling out there to service 27 clients. The trick is to never stop no matter how risky it might be as long as you know what you want your end result to be.
