Conversations with Darren Paltrowitz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darren Paltrowitz.

Hi Darren, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started working in and around entertainment when I was in high school. I simultaneously interned for an artist manager — I found his AOL email address in the CD booklet and offered to build him a website without really knowing how to do that — and writing for publications here in New York. I did more of that in college, working my way up to editor of a newspaper called Long Island Entertainment. Out of college, I landed a full-time job working within artist management while doing some writing and editing on the side. This led to other gigs in and around entertainment for the next decade or so.

These days, I am a licensed Private Investigator, which lets me use my writing and research skills in a creative way. At the same time, I host the “Paltrocast With Darren Paltrowitz” — which now airs weekly on 80+ TV channels plus all the key podcast outlets — and am writing my third book. I also still consult on entertainment-related projects. Long story short, good work generally leads to more work, and some of the people I work with I have known since my early days in entertainment. I really enjoy what I do professionally.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not smooth. My original field, entertainment, has changed so much from when I started that the skills you needed in 2000 or 2010 probably have little to do what you would be doing on a daily basis these days. But if you are the sort of person who keeps up with technology, networks effectively and does not mind putting in extra hours as needed, you will be fine. However, it was all worth it to get to where I am today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do a few things that seem disconnected from one another yet do actually tie together. I call upon my research skills for both my investigations and my writing-related work. Both also call for keeping on top of deadlines and staying on top of emails. Occasionally an entertainment-related person asks for me to investigate someone or something.

Altogether, I work full-time as an investigator, then have my book coming out in January 2024 — “DLR Book: How David Lee Roth Changed The World” via Backbeat Books” — plus my show airing weekly via 80+ TV channels and podcast networks. For the “Paltrocast” show I generally tape 5-10 interviews a week, most of which leading to articles posted at Paltrocast.com. I also consult on some projects, co-host a second podcast (as related to the book, “The DLR Cast”) and contribute to other publications. I try to stay active on projects that interest me, to say the least.

What sets me apart, I would argue, is that I am me. For better and for worse, I have created a unique career path that can’t really be summed up in a sentence. I hope to keep doing what I’m doing now for a long time to come.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
That’s a tough one. The way I am now — even though the Internet didn’t resemble what it is now back then — is pretty similar to who I was in high school. I went to a lot of concerts, I wrote articles, I tried to keep busy yet I also watched a lot of television, etc. But I’m someone who tries to look forward to what is coming up and create new memories in the process. So while I am definitely proud of a lot of things from my upbringing, I focus more on pushing the ball forward every day.
