Today we’d like to introduce you to multifaceted artist Jeremiah Coleman.
Hi Jeremiah, thanks for joining us. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
So far, it’s been a roller coaster. My early 20s was all about creating as much art as possible. To express my bottled up creative thoughts and build a vivid portfolio. I always had an eye for artsy imagery & style growing up, but always self-conscious to express it…until my 20s.
With years of building how I want to be viewed as a diverse artist, I went full throttle in making some goals happen. I moved from Newport News, Virginia August 2019, with a mission to take my craft next level. During this time, my life was different. Now I have my ten years godson full time (now 13 years old) since my childhood best friend, she passed January 2018. so I had to balance being single parent and my artistry.
I went through, and recently just coming out of an artist block after battling depression, and all the injustice of being black, the anxiety of knowing it can be me, covid19, self-care…it was heavy. My mom put great values, faith, and god heavily in my life growing up. Which I thank her all the time for that, and because of that I was able to sustain, to have a strong mind, and faith will carry you through.
So now I’m at a point where it’s time to show the world who I am. I have so many ideas that’ friends, family, loyal supporters previewed that said “what you waiting for? Oh noo, you need to put that out.” so this is the year of giving it all to live up to the person I know I am…. Creator, artist, fashion designer, photographer, innovator.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an artist that specializes in all aspects of art. My first love is fashion, my degree is in computer graphics, I’m actively a photographer. I’m known for my editorial style photography, fashion knowledge, and eclectic taste. I’m big on diversity, being able to be in all kinds of diverse spaces, and being able to relate, to hold it down and be the light in whatever room I stand in. So I’m proud to have an open mind, not to be close minded in creative spaces, conversations, friendships, workspaces, relationships. It makes me well-rounded individual.
What sets me apart? Individuality definitely sets me apart. I’m flexible and know who I am, I’m mindful in the moment. I’m a risk taker no matter if I’m a little nervous, I live for the thrill. I like pushing the envelope in fashion, art, styling, photography, graphics, interior design, etc.…..BUT!!! Tastefully cause it’s a difference between pushing the envelope and coming off not so good quality, lol.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Two ways I define success: one being with my work, what I’m known for. Hearing what people think when they mention my name, quality of service. When everyone just believe in you and says “you must be an artist, something creative.” That’s a success for me…the importance to project who I am even on a regular day, I feel powerful.
Second, when I’m able to translate my ideas to life. I have so much bottled up creative sometimes it can be overwhelming with wanted to get it all out and lack of resources. So when I’m able to bring it to life, and the love is real from my work, it’s like an affirmation that I need to produce more cause this is little to what I have in store and GODS plan.
