Conversations with Julian Timis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Timis.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Curiosity was always one of my main character traits. When I was about three yo, my parents gifted me a robot puppy, and I was so amazed by the fact that a toy like that was able to walk and make noises that the next day I tore it apart to see what’s inside and was it made. My parents were definitely horrified by the fact that I broke it, but I was more than amazed by the fact that I was able to take the electrical components and build something different.

Later on, my dad brought home a magnetophone, which was also one of my first encounters with music, and that only added more questions that contributed to the drive of exploring my engineering side more. A few years after it eventually broke down, I took it apart to take the speaker out of it which led to building one of my first custom speakers when I was around ten years old.

My parents noticed that I have some musical talent as I always liked to sing along the tracks I was playing, so they signed me up for signing classes and keyboard lessons, thinking I could become a successful weddings performer, which were making a lot of money at that time in my home country.

As I grew older, I took a deeper dive into music producing after I saw someone playing around with an early version of FL Studio at an internet cafe, and my first thought was, “I can do that!”. That led to a continuous search for software that was able to manipulate sound where the only limitation would be my imagination.

As things evolved and technology was only getting better, I got my hands on AtomixMP3, which was the first mixing software available in the early 2000, and that was the start for me as a DJ, as at that time standalone decks were still very unaffordable. Eventually, I was the go-to DJ among my friends and co-workers by playing music at college parties and team buildings.

After moving to the US in 2017, I wanted to take a deeper dive into music producing, so I started purchasing basic studio equipment (MIDI keyboard, studio monitors) and began producing a few trap/hip hop/pop beats. As I wanted to make my music be heard, I started looking for singers/rappers, which led to an amazing collaboration with Shilan (@singshilan) which led to releasing my first hip-hop/pop EP in 2020 called “Live, Love, Laugh” (what a cliche right?) and ended up performing with her at Outside Lands festival in San Francisco in October 2021!

Although I like all types of music, electronic music always had a special place in my heart and wanted to take a deeper dive into mixing/producing a groove that could make people dance and spread some joy on the dance floor. At the beginning of 2020, my best friend and biggest supporter, Scott Steiner organized a party where we had a full DJ setup in a basement of a cabin in the mountains of north of Georgia. I was so drawn to all that equipment that I’ve never had my hands on till that point, so I started playing some music, and everyone loved it! Fast forward through the pandemic, with a huge support from Scott Steiner, Ronnie Raskal and Corey Von Waters, I had my first show in a club at Odyssey After!

Following that, I’ve been more than fortunate to perform at various locations around Atlanta such as Crazy Atlanta, Misfits, Fowling Warehouse and even a festival that my good friend Scott organized called Rebirth.

Also, this year, after working on it for way too long, I managed to release my first EP as Mister Trippin called “Hat Trick”, which contains 3 progressive tracks that are only the beginning of my deep dive into electronic music!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To me, the biggest struggle was always financial, as growing up in an ex-communist country with little resources, even music instruments were a luxury for me. Being able to get equipment to improve the sound I’m trying to output made a huge difference for me!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work as a Quality Assurance Manager for a Fortune 500 company. As soon as I got my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science about 12 years ago, I started as a Quality Assurance engineer and part of my job was writing code to automate user flows on different pieces of software. I take pride in being able to learn fast and adapt to any kind of technological environment I’m facing!

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’m a firm believer that rhythm is at the core of every living organism, and music takes that core component and elevates it to a dimension that creates unity. As a DJ and a big advocate of mindfulness, playing music to any audience lights up a huge joy in my heart as I love seeing people on the dance floor being in tune with the present! As a producer, I’ve met a lot of great minds that are reserved when it comes to starting to create something on their own and I’ve always told them something that my dad thought me: “You never know unless you try!”. Never be afraid to express yourself, the creation that’s laying inside your brain might not always be the greatest, but it can always inspire others to create even greater things!
