Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamiya Harris.
Hi Kamiya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in the beauty salon my whole life. My mom owns a hair salon where she did hair full-time until she became a real estate agent. Since birth to now, I’ve always had a strong interest in beauty. Though my mom was the hairstylist, that really wasn’t a strong skill of mine so I explored some. When quarantine started my mom invested into a nail business for me, that failed quickly. Part of the reason for that was due to my ability to not be able to do acrylics, but also my passion and interest wasn’t fully there for acrylics. I began working at Walmart my junior year of high school where I worked for 12 months. I realized that I didn’t like having to work for someone, I wanted to run myself and be self-made. In July 2022, I took my last Walmart check and invested into a lash class with a girl I found on Instagram. The class was around $200-$300 and it came with a lifetime mentor, a lash kit, vendors, and the beginner steps to start lashing.
At the end of the class, I instantly fell in love. I went straight home and practiced even more, watched plenty of videos, and did what was needed to expand my knowledge of the lashing industry. I started off by practicing on my close friends and family. It took me about 5 hours to do my first-ever set, and it did not look like anything I imagined in my head. Instead of me getting discouraged and giving up, I practiced and researched more. The more I kept trying and trying, the better my work got. Seeing myself actually learning and growing keeps me encouraged and motivated. I love looking at the outcome of my work and just being able to help other females around the world look and feel pretty. I’m almost a year into my investment and I feel like I’ve made the right choice. I’m growing and learning every day, and I’m seeing improvement in all areas. I can finally say, I’ve found my true passion in the beauty industry.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been times where a set didn’t come out how I wanted. It’s also been times where I feel like I’m taking too long or I’m doing something wrong. I started off with sets that had multiple gaps, were uneven, had lashes going the wrong direction, and some sets even didn’t last long enough.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Lash technician, and I specialize in lash extensions. I’m most proud of the improvement of how my sets turn out. I’m different from other lash technicians because I take pride in my work. It’s not just about the money, it’s about the relationship with clients and the experience you give.
What’s next?
I plan on going to college while still focusing on my lash business, hopefully I’ll be the whole college campus lash tech. I plan on majoring in psychology so I can be a psychologist and therapist to teenagers. I want to start a youtube channel to document my way, including the college life, the lash industry, and just everyday things. I want multiple incomes, that’s a key to getting rich.
