Conversations with Makayla Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makayla Williams.

Hi Makayla, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always struggled with genuine girl friendships and finding girls like me. Growing up friends came and went but I only kept a small group of friends around. I recently starting taking my social media “seriously” this year. I knew I had always wanted to do something big; I could never pinpoint exactly what that big thing was until this year. When I first began micro influencing, I realized I quickly got discouraged by the opinions, judgment, and negative commentary that began to surface. Many believed, I would not make it as an influencer and were very quick to judge. I then realized, the importance of being a girl’s girl. I have always been a huge advocate for women support other women and empowering each other rather than tearing each other down. Not in a way that you expect a compliment in return but genuinely lifting up other women to see the potential everyone else sees. It is difficult enough to be a young girl today, let alone one with dreams of making a living off of social media. This year, I created an environment I am proud of on my Instagram. When you look in the comments you see beautiful, kind, intelligent, and wonderful women of all ages. Girls need each other and rather than tearing one another down, imagine how powerful we can become together and share our love for fashion.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely has not been a smooth road. Being a girl and making genuine friends can be tough. Especially in high school, it seemed everything was a popularity contest or we were all competing with one another which can take a significant toll on mental health. I struggle with anxiety and it breaks my heart there is this stigma around mental health and no one is truly talking about it like it’s a normal occurrence. My goal has been to be the internet sister I never had to girls and women of all ages.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am most proud to have created a community of beautiful, intelligent, and kind women who all want to lift each other up and support one another and we all share a passion for fashion. I feel like this has had many positive effects on others, myself, and being a micro-influencer. This community has allowed brands to feel my authenticity and connection I have to my followers and the type of niche I am looking to grow.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My biggest mentors have definitely been my parents. My mom inspires me to become the best woman I can possibly be and to be the change I want to see in the world. My dad has encouraged and instilled in me that no dream is ever too big and to shoot for the stars. I am extremely grateful to have the support system I do.
