Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Sanders.
Hi Mary, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m an Atlanta-based graphic designer and muralist. I got my Master’s in Advertising from SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) and work for a local agency and do freelance graphic design. I keep busy by painting large-scale murals all around Georgia. I lead a team of all-women painters who support local women-owned businesses as well!
After moving to Atlanta for my master’s, I found a group of women that wanted to help me paint murals. After finding them I really started to connect with my community, and I feel like I was more a part of this city as a whole because of all these unique artists that I met and connected with.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think anyone starting out has moments of worry that what they are doing is not enough. Mine was the first year I started doing murals here in the city. I only had one mural contract for my first year. I had set such high expectations on that mural, thinking that it would lead to immediate business for me and my painters but that was not the case. Things turned around after the second year but when you are growing something that is very niche. It’s often difficult to get a following quickly.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a graphic designer, muralist, and fine art painter.
I am most known for my ability to mix my graphic design with my murals. I think it’s really unique that I can help my clients visualize their brand in a physical way, like a mural or signage on the side of their building.
I am most proud of starting my own business, Very Mary Murals, and taking a dream that I had growing up and making it a reality.
What makes you happy?
I think something that has made me really happy is that I have found not only people to help me paint murals, but also lifelong friendships. When I started out here, I was very lonely because I didn’t know anyone but now I have found an entire community of amazing women and artists here in Atlanta.
