Conversations with Michael Toache

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Toache.

Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up with both my parents as artists. That meant that I was constantly surrounded by creativity. Our house was filled with art and design. My childhood environment encouraged my imaginative processes and inspired me to discover what I liked. While growing up, I was able to create by painting/drawing and building Legos. As I got older, my passion grew into all aspects of my life. I am an architect major currently, where I am able to conceptualize and bring my ideas to a physical form. I work in fashion where I see the design processes from the start to the finished product. I used to go with my father to the thrift store as he searched for things for his business and now I feel the same excitement for clothing. Working with garments that come from all points of time has been an incredible experience and has tuned my taste towards the highest quality fabrics and techniques in a “quality over quantity” sentiment. There is no specific medium that I choose but rather whatever form of design I decide to be a part of.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think the life of a creative is never easy. Challenges stimulate peoples’ minds in many ways. Adversity is unique and has the ability to forge perspectives that may give birth to amazing things. That’s not to say that one requires the other. Anybody can do amazing things regardless of their past.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The work I produce as an architecture student and a clothing designer is very unique to me and is a great way to bring my thoughts to the physical realm. Something that starts off as something as vague as a concept will grow into an experience with shapes, voids, materials and light. Developing the experience of a space to influence others exactly how I feel is an incredible process. Exploring languages that transcend the second dimension into reality where time and life are a factor gives the maker unimaginable power. I feel as though fashion and architecture share many of these values. Textiles are a way for the mind to create an experience through the folding and techniques that clothing has always been a part of. I think I am set apart by everything that has lead me to be who I am, that is unique to me and can never be replicated. My projects all incorporate a piece of me whether in my architectural practices or in the clothing that I make. My work in both of these practices are something I’m very proud of and I cannot wait to share with everybody else.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
All the people in my life have a very strong influence on me. Because of this, I make sure that I nurture the relationships that encourage me and inspire me to do the best. My friends and family have always made sure that I am working to my full potential, they are not afraid to tell me when I need to keep driving or pick up the slack.
