Conversations with Nomi Lifowè

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nomi Lifowè.

Hi Nomi, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My love for writing has been a beautiful journey!

I fell in love with writing when I was 6 years old, as a child who never talked (nicknamed Mute Girl) writing allowed me to express myself in ways I struggled with verbally.

I was terribly self-conscious about my stutter and the subsequent bullying so writing became my greatest ally.

It introduced me to my rich inner world – that we all possess.

We all have an enormous amount of creativity, and it just boils down to homing in on the outlet that best suits us.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The journey to publishing my first book was certainly not easy, but alas is that not how it is for all journeys that are worthwhile in the end?

My biggest obstacle was finding an illustrator I really clicked with, it was fantastic when I connected with Monique Mortimer via Instagram of all places, we clicked from the get-go and it was delicious to find out that we were both South African, I mean, what are the odds?

Having an ally like Monique who truly connected to my vision made it all so smooth from there on out, her suggestions were always amazing, and the illustrations truly emote all I was trying to say in my children’s book, A World in One.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a children’s book author! I just released my debut children’s book, A World in One, based off a lullaby I wrote and would sing to my niece as a baby. This book is a love letter to my niece.

I believe what sets me apart is my motivation which is my childhood. As a CSA survivor, such an experience irrevocably changes your world, the trajectory of your life. Having my childhood gone at such a young age, compounded by the other abuse occurring growing up, I truly believed everything I was taught to feel and believe about myself.

With my niece and with all children of colour, my goal is to introduce books into the minority community that promotes making sure that we let our children know that they are loved, protected, safe, and most importantly cherished.

That is what I am most proud of, being able to break the cycle with my niece and I am truly grateful for the space her mom allows me to have in her life.

It has hands down been such a rewarding experience because what an honor it is to love someone – my niece – unconditionally.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Hmm, I am a beach girl at heart, being Tanzanian on my birth mother’s side, summers spent in Zanzibar was the norm. So that is what I like least about our city, the lack of beaches ha-ha!

I love that our city is a melting pot of cultures, what a beautiful gift to meet people from all walks of life and the restaurants are beyond amazing.

I am a junkie for Ethiopian food!
