Conversations with Ricky Persons

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ricky Persons.

Hi Ricky, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born in Birmingham, Alabama and went to Tuskegee University to study engineering. While there I carried out many tasks in finding myself. Be it, studying abroad, pledging, as well as music curation. Which led me to DJing when a good friend of mine gifted me a board to do a party for them.. strictly from hearing my collection of music and knowing my taste. Ever since then I have done shows all over Alabama, Atlanta, and now Little Rock where I reside for the time being.

To this day I have a magazine and radio show built and designed for the community of music history heads under the name of @freshxproduce you can find on Instagram. Where we take submissions as well as promote and produce playlists monthly. The main idea of the page is to find a community that looks for organic and original thoughts and tastes.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not been smooth, and I’m thankful it has not been. Through every obstacle, it proves that this is a road to greatness. Struggles I have run into is team building, consistency and just finding ways to add value to others.

Also with moving to different areas, finding resources who fit the communities outlook.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Well, I’m an electrical engineer, I help with community gardens in the areas I’ve been in as well as producer/DJ. I am most proud of my engineering because without that mindset I would not be able to do the other things that I do. Being a problem solver is most important because new things arise daily. What sets me apart from others is my willingness to put myself out there knowing it’s not easy for anyone. Also my taste in music and willingness to share my love for music with everyone.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have so many people to name who have been next to me in my journey. My cousin Sydney who helps with me graphics and content planning, and one of my closest homies Kenyatta who came up with the idea of Fresh Produce with me. There are so many people to name and I don’t want to leave anyone out.
