Today we’d like to introduce you to Superstar DJ Ros.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Where do I start? I was a “creative” before it became the term du jour. To make the journey most digestable, let’s start with the core skill that has been so good to me: DJing.
I began playing with my dad’s records at the age of 9 in my parent’s home. I would listen to the mixshows on the radio that features DJs that went on to become some of my personal heroes such as Mr. Magic & Kool DJ Red Alert. Coupled with watching performances of other legendary DJs such as Grandmaster Flash & Jam Master Jay (RUN DMC), I knew that I wanted this artform to be a part of my life for the rest of my life, one way or another.
Now, all these decades later, it is amazing to look back and see all the adventures that the artform took me on: DJing for Beyonce & Christina Milian on tour; having a client list that includes major names / brands such as Tyler Perry, Microsoft, Mercedes Benz, HBO, and Victoria’s Secret; and launching my entrepreneurial endeavors such as my growing ‘Million Dollar DJ, Inc’ brand of businesses (book, online coaching program, virtual conference, & podcast); the launch of my luxury streetwear brand, BROOKLYN SLICE FTW; and my forthcoming debut album, ‘CAPSULE”; nearly ALL of these opportunities have been born or influenced based on my choice to pursue DJing as a career.
I am most proud of the fact that my path now serves as an inspiration to many other DJs and entrepreneurs around the world. That literally means everything to me.
In conclusion, the thing that sets me apart from everyone else is I never waited for something to be “cool” before I rocked with it if I was genuinely into myself. That mindset has been built into my thinking since childhood and, as a lifelong dreamer/creator, it is has served me well.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it has absolutely not been a smooth road at all.
Through financial challenges that come with the entrepreneurial road, mental health challenges love loss, and figuring it out as you go, that path to the successes I have experienced have definitely come with a significant amount of turbulence.
Still, as bumpy as the road has been at times, there are few things I would change if I did it again. The lessons learned are worth the pay off.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work is difficult to describe in a soundbite. I have recently been telling those who ask that I can best be described as someone who descends from the same tribe as Kanye West, Heron Preston, Sean Combs, or Virgil Abloh. I am definitely a member of that collective.
I am a creative multi-hyphenate. I am a world-renowned DJ. A songwriter. A first-time author. A streetwear designer. A creative director. A recording artist. An author. A lifelong entrepreneur. A recording artist. A coach/mentor to DJs the world. Etc.
My forthcoming DJ business book, “How To Be A Million Dollar DJ”, has already birthed an online class, a virtual conference in June & December every year, and a podcast.
My restlessness during quarantine shutdowns led to a creative spurt that resulted into ideas that have become the content of my forthcoming debut album, ‘CAPSULE’, a combination of Quincy Jones’ seminal LP “Back On The Block” & Dr. Dre’s “The Chronic”.
A random idea about creating a streetwear brand around t-shirts hanging in a fictional pizzeria in East Flatbush, Brooklyn that has lived in my head rent-free for three years has now become a luxury streetwear brand named ‘BROOKLYN SLICE FTW’.
My charitable initiative, #DJsAgainstHunger, which organizes DJs around the country twice a year to help gather food items for local food banks in an effort to fight food insecurity.
To name a few endeavors…
My goal, especially as mortality has become a thought of prominence in my subconscious since the onslaught of the Covid-era, has become a focus on self-expression. Getting my dreams out into the plasma. Live full, die empty. Legacy.
I am proud of it all.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I have always been a creative of some sort. Though I began playing with records around the age of 9 years old, I’ve had many chapters of expression that were unique to me: Lead singer of a boy band, star track athlete in high school, creator of two urban apparel brands in 90’s & early 2000’s, radio DJ in my early 20’s, etc.
My head was always filled with dreams and ideas as a youngster and such has continued as I have grown into a life-long entrepreneur as an adult. Additionally, I was always laughing and looking for the joys of life.
That has definitely not changed as an adult. Life has always been adventure.
