Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Haughton.
Travis, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a film director and producer from St. Louis, Missouri; based in Atlanta, Georgia. I recently graduated from Webster University majoring in Film, Television, and Video Production, minoring in Scriptwriting, as well as pursuing a certificate in Entrepreneurship.
Over the years, I’ve attended the American Black Film Festival to learn more information about the film industry coming directly from black perspectives; The American Film Market to learn more about the distribution and sales aspect of film, ScreenCraft, where I connected with people like television screenwriter, Ben Cory Jones, Senior Production & Development Executive at Hartbeat Productions a.k.a my mentor, Wayne Horton, and many more creatives.
Putting in the work creating and networking with many people in the entertainment industry has led me where I am today. I’m currently working in the film industry on movie sets living the dream as well as balancing my own personal projects.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Everyone deals with ups and downs in life, so in my opinion you have to fall to get stronger.
In my case, this road was very challenging at times because when I thought everything was going great, it wasn’t. One thing that kept me going was my plan. Having a plan for whatever you’re putting your mind to is important because to me it motivates the goal you’re going for. Becoming more organized with my time, strategizing how I’m going to achieve my goals, and many more things I do to help myself, but don’t get me wrong, the ride will still have bumps along the way because that’s just life.
Overall, yes I have plenty of times where I struggle, but best believe I come back 1,000% stronger.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
After being bullied for many years without seeking help, I almost did something that I would’ve regretted for the rest of my life, but thanks to the man above, I’m here today.
Mental Health is so important and I don’t think people realize it nor take time to focus on it, especially in the black community.
My work focuses on things that I had to deal with mentally and physically.
What sets me apart from other filmmakers? Nowadays on television, you rarely see anything focusing on mental health in the black community. As I use my voice through film discussing my mental health, hopefully other people will speak up and do the same as well as seek help from a professional.
Any big plans?
I have a lot of goals in life, but as of right now here are some:
– Work at a diverse and inclusive production company
– Create my own scholarship to support Black Students at predominantly white institutions
– Open up my own production company to support black creatives in the film industry
– Become a Psychotherapist
– Give back to my hometown
– Drop more films
#Stay tuned things are coming before you know it!
