Conversations with Zakiiya Wigfall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zakiiya Wigfall.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
So Zee started as my art brand which consisted of custom clothing, jewelry, and artwork. I remember back to when I hosted my first fashion show in the summer of 2011 where my high school friends modeled my bleached denim pieces and that show was EVERYTHING! So when I overheard a conversation about what to do with this “little building” I knew there could be a place for my brand to live and thrive. Once I acquired So Zee Gallery in 2016, my vision was for it to be an art gallery where creatives could host events, shows, etc. however, the gallery had other plans. When we opened at the end of 2020 my family and friends loved the space so much that they wanted to rent it for their own parties/events and once that started, it never stopped. The gallery has blossomed into an amazing, intimate event space where I’ve experienced so many special moments from baby showers to surprise birthday parties and even my own wedding reception! I’ve also had the opportunity to host paint classes and pop-up shop events for the community. Just knowing that I’m providing a space for people to gather and celebrate themselves or a loved one has truly been rewarding for me.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a beautiful journey, with highs and lows. I’ve had so many grand opening dates planned, construction setbacks, money obstacles, events that fell through, plumbing issues, COVID setbacks- you name it! But through it all I give it to God and keep going. I had to get comfortable in knowing that things will happen- and that’s okay.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an artist and event space owner. I specialize in painting and creating customized clothing and accessories. My gallery space is So Zee Gallery located in Marietta, GA where I help create celebratory moments for my guests. We’re just getting started so keep an eye out for our creative and community based events. I’m proud of every aspect of work because it speaks to who I am. My art, my business, my brand, my job, my customers- I pour my passion into it all. I think what sets me apart from others is my creativity, consistency, and love and respect for others.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
To me, everything you do is a risk. How will you ever know if something will work out if you don’t take a risk? Even if it doesn’t work out how you imagined, you can adjust and realign and try again. But what if it works out beyond your wildest imagination? That’s a risk I’m willing to take.
