Today we’d like to introduce you to Antrell Vining.
Hi Antrell, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story starts with my upbringing where I grew in a lower middle-class household in Conyers, GA. I had always been one to push toward being independent as possible. As such, my first job was at 15 working at subway in Lithonia, GA. During this time, I was keen on becoming the first in my family to graduate high school and the first to go onto college. I was accepted to a number of colleges and eventually decided on Georgia State University majoring in biological sciences with a premed concentration becoming a first-generation college student. While in college, I was very involved in many organizations allowing me to establish a presence among my classmates. During this time, I also battled the decision on whether I wanted to continue pursuing my childhood dream of becoming a physician. This internal battle caused me to develop depression and anxiety over the feeling of becoming a failure and letting my family down. After graduating, I decided to continue medicine and was admitted to medical school in 2020.
No more than three months later, I dropped out after realizing I was unmotivated towards being in medicine. I got my first corporate job shortly thereafter at one of the top consulting firms after applying to countless jobs. This was difficult to do with a biology degree. After working at Apple for three years in undergrad, I realized my passion for technology and decided to put my energy toward it. I earned multiple certifications that would allow me to get my first job as an IT Project Manager in 2021. That same year, I decided that I would help people do the same after realizing there were so many people in the same position of wanting to make the pivot into tech. I created my first business, Vining & Company, LLC focused on providing consulting and resume review services. I established my customer basis from social media, growing over 35,000 followers on TikTok in less than six months teaching people how they could do the same as me. Today, I’m on track to earn over a quarter million dollars by year’s end and will graduate with a master’s degree in December 2022. The first in my family to do either of these things. Dropping out of medical school was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and now teaching people how they could do the same has become a burning passion for me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it’s been a struggle from day 1. Being a first generation college student is never easy. Not having parents or siblings to offer guidance leaves you in the position to do everything on your own. Also, making the decision to drop out of medical school was pre-empted by years of depression and anxiety. Likewise, deciding that social media would be the best place to establish a customer basis for my business was difficult as I had always suffered from severe social anxiety which I have overcome over these last few years.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Over the last year I began making digital content aimed at providing free advice to people on resources available that can help them make the pivot into tech. Prior to this, I was never involved or interested in creating a social media presence. However, since beginning this journey I am more interested than ever in further establishing a presence on social media as a creative creator able to convey information that will provide results. I love to hear stories from my followers or consulting customers when they finally get their first 6 figure job or job in tech as a whole. This is a passion I did not know I had before and it wouldn’t have come to light if I hadn’t have made the decision to drop out of medical school.
