Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Cobb.
Hi Ashley, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, I always wanted to work in the health field. Initially, I thought I would become a doctor or pharmacist. However, it wasn’t until after college that I fell in love with sexual health. In 2016, I started a blog and Facebook page centered around black women’s sexuality and pleasure as a hobby and honestly didn’t expect it to take off.
Then BOOM…fast forward six years later and I have turned talking and writing about sex into a full-time career as a sex blogger and freelancer. I am the black Carrie Bradshaw of Atlanta, minus the rich white man! Today, I run my own sex blog, Gossip and Gasms, which features stories on the latest sex related news, to include trending sex topics and lifestyles event reviews. In addition to writing for my own blog, I also write a weekly sex advice column for Madame Noire and freelance write for several other publications.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Following my passion has not been a crystal stair. There have been several bumps in the road. My face and name have always been associated with my brand, “Sex With Ashley,” which had its pros, and even more cons.
Prior to me becoming a sex blogger my career was in education. Eventually being an educator that discussed sex in my free time became an issue that resulted in me leaving the education field. In fact, I would lose two more jobs after that because of my then sex blog. The upside of constant termination forced me into a sink or swim mindset which proved to be a defining moment in my success.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a sex blogger, which means I write about and create conversations about sex. Ultimately, I guess you can say I educate people about sexuality and help them to challenge their views on sex and sexuality in written form.
Getting paid to share my thoughts and opinions on black sexuality is pretty cool job if you ask me. One, that I personally didn’t think would be possible for someone who looked like me—which is my most proudest accomplistment. The only successful sex bloggers I know and knew at the time was white. But here I am, a black woman paving the way for other sex bloggers who look like me.
