Daily Inspiration: Meet Chanzlee Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanzlee Mitchell.

Hi Chanzlee, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I specialize in low maintenance, natural-like color, and custom blended hand-tied extensions. I started my hair and makeup journey when I was 13 years old, answering the phone at a salon. In 2017, I took my first extension class with Habit Salon. I learned all extension methods and how to perfectly blend and choose what works best for each client.

In 2018, I apprenticed in one of Athens top salons for two years where I worked with the Gym Dawgs and Southern Distinction Magazine. In 2020, I passed my boards and continued to build my clientele.

In July of 2021, I was placed in the top 25 by Behind The Chair, the worlds largest hair award. With entries from 80 different countries. I now have found my home at Urban Chic Salon. My goal is to give you a real and exciting experience. Can’t wait to see you in my chair!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It most certainly has not been a smooth road. I struggled in a large salon atmosphere. It was not for me. So, I took a step down for an entire year. I wasn’t working in a salon or creating and doing what I do best. It was the hardest year of my life. I thought since I disliked the way my salon was, that I wouldn’t like any salon. I finally realized what I was struggling with, disappointment. The feelings I felt if someone didn’t like their hair, and I knew I did my best, it was heartbreaking for me. I didn’t think I’d ever been able to get over something that I took so personally. But with time, building my confidence, and realizing you can’t please everyone, changed not only my work life but my personal life as well.

Next realization, communication is KEY. Being real and honest is KEY. Consultation is so so so important to me now. I make sure my client and I are on the same page. I’m still learning and still perfecting every aspect of my job, but that realization changed everything for me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Master Cosmetologist at Urban Chic Salon in Bogart, GA. I specialize in lived-in hair color, low-maintenance color, and hand-tied extensions. This July, the world’s largest hair awards placed me in the top 25 out of over 4,000 entries. I feel like what sets me apart from others is I prioritize my time with a client. I currently don’t double book myself. I take my time to create and deliver exactly what the client is looking for without rushing.

What were you like growing up?
When I was growing up, I was girly. I seriously think I played with Barbies until middle school. I was obsessed with fashion. I would wear bootcut jeans, a tank top, and a cowgirl hat just to go with my mom to the track while she worked out. I was very independent and fearless.

My older sister and I were competitive cheerleaders for the majority of our childhood. I was never scared to try any new skills, and that’s what set me apart in cheer. I was the youngest on my team every single year. Cheer taught me discipline and that not everyone is your friend.
