Today we’d like to introduce you to Elegance Davis.
Hi Elegance, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up in St. Louis, my family and I’s living situation was not always stable. Moving from place to place a lot, I was never really able to live in the moment of things. It wasn’t until I was adopted and my father gifted me a camera that I began to value the beauty of photography. He always taught me the importance of capturing moments, so that at any time, I could be able to go back and revisit them. I didn’t truly grasp that concept until later in life. While it wasn’t apparent to me at the time, that moment sparked a fire in me to create. Fast forward to my first year out of high school, college wasn’t really working out for me. I decided to join the military in hopes of finding fulfillment there. I too, felt even more lost. I found a dead-end job and after working there for a few years, I began to feel like I didn’t know my purpose in life. I had hit rock bottom. In that place, is where I picked up my camera that had been gifted to me almost 5 years prior, and found photography again. Taking pictures and unleashing my creativity was what gave me that fulfillment I had been searching for.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
By no means has this road been easy. Entrepreneurship never is! Aside from pursuing your creative ambition, beyond just the gratification of creating, you need money to live. While being creative has always come natural to me, learning the business side of things was a struggle. It took me to move away from my hometown to a new state to get this together. By this time, I now had a wife and a kid and I knew if I didn’t become serious about my craft, that I would have to settle for doing photography as a hobby. During this time, I decided to work odd jobs, while building my business, so that I could provide for my family while still growing my brand. It has been a long 7 year journey, but I am proud to say I have finally reached the point where my business is able to fully support my family.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I consider myself a portrait photographer. I specialize in connecting to my subjects and capturing the essence of who they are and what they are trying to represent. I am known for my beauty and editorial work. With a strong background in graphic design, I’ve been able to set myself apart from other photographers by creating visuals outside of the usual spectrum of photography. This has not only helped me unleash my full potential, by allowing me free creative reign, but it has helped my clients stand out with the branding and designs I’ve created for them. I also love when my work can go beyond just the business need that they have and become a confidence boost by allowing them to see themselves in a new way.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
First and foremost, I have to give credit to Jesus for truly orchestrating the way my life has gone. Coming from my background and having experienced the things I have, there is no way I would be where I am today without Christ. Next, I truly would like to thank my wife and family for being my biggest supporters. From my dad buying me my first camera, to my wife quitting her job to help me plan my business and learning web design to design my website. I am forever grateful. Any area that I am weak, she has been there to pray for me and give me the support and confidence boost I need. This has been a constant reminder to keep pushing and that I can accomplish any goal that I have set for myself.
