Daily Inspiration: Meet Emilie Rose

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emilie Rose.

Hi Emilie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ll first start off with my parents who were immigrants from Haiti who both moved to the US and both met each other in New York around the 80’s. My father was born in the capital; port au prince and my mother is from Leogane. They lived in New York for an ample amount of time but then decided to move to the southern region of the U.S due to my aunt’s health condition that forced her to stay in warmer climates. She battled sickle cell anemia, A disease that mostly inherits in black people. After a few years of settling in the peach state, in winter of 1997, my parents finally had their first child; which was me. It wasn’t easy for my parents at first to push for children. My mother was diagnosed with fibroids that prevented her from having children, fortunately, she was able once she had the operation done in her home country. I was born in Atlanta but was raised on the outskirts of clayco basically my entire life! As a young child, I automatically found an interest in singing ever since I could talk. I came from a very oriented ambitious – driven family full of extreme knowledge and talent, but I knew singing was where my heart lied as I got older.

Growing as a young child my father was a DJ and took me out to parties where he was asked to spin music at. My father also loved building things handmade, he built huge stereo speakers, which was so cool! I grew up listening to different genres of music; reggae – konpa- Latin, 60’s-80’s & 90’s throwbacks thanks to him. My father was very passion driven with what he did, my grandmother had a very nice voice and was an opera singer herself, which I think evidently emerged onto me heavily. I found interest in making music since I taught myself the foundation of it and the skills I honed my whole life. I sung at talent shows when I was younger and started posting videos of myself singing on youtube when I was ten year old. I always envisioned that it would be nice someday to live my passion and my dreams but after I graduated high school I was lost with what I wanted to initially pursue as my career. no one really believed in me as I sought to finally bet on myself to pursue my talents the creator gifted me with, people doubted that it was impossible to pursue something they didn’t see was possible, they called me crazy and get real. but seeing and envisioning my dreams was just as real as reality was when you’re in control of it. I’m doing this all for little eight years old Rose.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s definitely been a turbulent path, not necessarily an easy one – especially as a young black girl growing up. I didn’t necessarily have much friends in school, kids were mean so I stayed to myself. Things were rough at home with my parents, they didn’t get along at times, it became a struggle as the household became dysfunctional.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I did cosplay for some time and was doing music too, People have known me as Sugoirose on social media for some of my popular cosplays I’ve done, I started doing my music full-time. I make music and do shows around the city. I’m proud of my work ethic and my choices to delve into several fields of creativity. It definitely is exciting. I love going hard and pouring my soul into my crafts, it’s hard to put yourself in just one box once you do that.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The downside I faced and realized after the quarantine was the overwhelming sensation of adjusting to the new. There were perks I understood and humbly didn’t take for granted. It was an inevitable experience.
