Today we’d like to introduce you to Heavenly Roosa.
Hi Heavenly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I can remember vividly three of my cousins being really artistic. As I got older, I started to realize that I actually possessed the same talent. In high school, I would privately write poems but it wasn’t until college that I started writing poems with what I felt had a purpose, painting and practicing photography. I think at times, I tried to run from my talent because I always wondered what people would think about me being skilled at more than one thing.
Growing up, we are taught to go to school and get an education, then land the typical 9-5 in the corporate setting. Not many of us are told to chase out our dreams. In fact, some are told to “get their head out of the clouds.” Life has a funny way of working out because the very things I tried to run from are the things that make me who I am today. When I lost my grandfather a couple of years ago, I started painting more heavily to cope with the pain I felt. It honestly became a therapy session for me and was a way for me to tune out the entire world. Nothing but a canvas, incense burning, vibey music, my thoughts, and a deep connection to my work. Before I knew it, I had probably had about 10 – 12 full-size paintings that I was ready to show to the world. I held my first art exhibit, which turned out amazing and was even personally invited to display my work in 2 Chainz’ famous Pink Trap House in 2017. I never knew my art would be so recognized or catch the attention of many and that was truly a humbling experience.
As time furthered, I became more in love with the camera, which led me on some amazing journeys and working with some pretty dope people. I landed an internship working for DJ Drama at Means Street Studios. As a radio photography intern. After being an intern there for quite some time and proving myself, I worked my way up and started taking pictures in the radio room for the Streetz is Watchin Radio show. Being able to get into the radio room is definitely an honor and a big deal as an intern! It was an amazing opportunity, as I got to meet tons of amazing artists who you guys hear on the radio every day. I will always be grateful for the experience. Shortly after that, I started learning more of the ins and outs of marketing, content creating and branding as I worked as a producer for my friend Joi Coleman on her radio show The Jawn Joi, which now hits @dashradio every Thursday from 4 pm-6 pm (check her out).
Fast forward, after some time, I made the decision to focus on myself and figure out what it is I wanted to do. I decided that I wanted to go back to school to obtain my Masters. After graduating in 2019 with my Master’s degree in Forensic Psychology, I realized that although I do have the book smarts and multiple degrees, my heart is truly wrapped into everything art-related. Once I was able to finally close the textbooks, I started painting again but this time using my face as a canvas. Creating different looks on Instagram helped my blog prosper a lot more than it had in the past. Currently, I use all skills gained and apply them to my content creation process. I love creating and I love the freedom of doing what I love. I’m finding that when you really love something, it’s almost impossible to run from it. Being able to have had amazing opportunities prepared me for the work I am currently doing when it comes to my brand and partnering with other brands. On a typical day, I work in the corporate world with a top insurance defense personal injury firm assisting attorneys in managing over 250+ cases. Outside of my day job, I spend every single moment content creating for my blog, shooting for clients, and working on my newly launched lip gloss business Glossy Bae Co.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road at all. There have been times I wanted to quit and there have been times I felt I didn’t have the support I needed behind me or that I simply was confused about what it is I should be doing. Everything that I experienced made me exactly who I am today. I have learned that it’s not about the likes or having 50,000 followers on Instagram. It truly is about staying true to yourself, never giving up, and living every day like it’s your last by continually putting your best foot forward into what you feel you should be doing.
Having a solid foundation behind you is key when chasing your dreams. I am so lucky to have my beautiful family, my wonderful fiancé, and a few close friends that help me on my personal journey to success. It’s only up from here!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a Beauty and Lifestyle Content Creator Pieceofheavennn is my little mark on the world. Pieceofheavennn is the name of my blog and it was originally created as a safe place to discuss topics for women so many I knew were not discussing out loud. By creating an anonymous entry, I would let my audience pick the topics discussed. By doing so, I was able to touch on topics such as physical, emotional, and mental abuse, heartbreak, and much more. Since launching two years ago, Pieceofheavennn has grown its platform and now I use the platform to share my love for makeup, photography, fashion, women’s wellness, and so many more amazing things that my audience will see along the way.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Currently, I have a love for Podcasts! I recently started listening to Balanced Black Girl on Spotify. It’s dedicated to helping the every day black girl feel her best while approaching health, self-care, personal development, and well-being advice. I also have a guilty pleasure for reading any and everything Rupi Kaur. Her latest piece Home Body resonated with me in many ways.
