Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Vaughn.
Hi Jasmine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a child, I always had a love for any and everything entertainment but never knew exactly which route I wanted to go. The summer after my sophomore year of high school, I came across an ad for a film internship in my hometown of Chester, Pennsylvania which is about 20 miles outside of Philadelphia. I participated as an intern under the advisory of Joselyn Young, who was a student at Swarthmore College at the time. During this summer internship, I along with eight other participants created a short film about the increase of violence that struck the city. From that moment, I knew that being able to tell one’s story visually was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I later went to Full Sail University where I received my Bachelors of Science in Film and my Masters of Science in Entertainment Business. In July of 2014, after graduating with my bachelor’s I started BlkSheep Entertainment and moved from Orlando to Atlanta where BlkSheep has been located for the past seven years.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One thing I tell anybody that’s thinking of getting into this field is that this comes with a lot of work, blood, sweat, and tears. This journey has been one of the most trying that I’ve ever been on but also the most rewarding one. I have seen it all. Being scammed, not getting paid for projects, losing friends. This field can get lonely and hard, but as long as you find a genuine team and stay down with those people, keep God first, and embrace every moment it will be a journey you won’t forget.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a videographer that specializes in film production of all types. My company is most known for our music videos. Having been in business for seven years, I have done a lot of work to be proud of. Being able to work with countless celebrities, traveling to other countries, being able to speak in front of different crowds, all of it makes me proud but nothing made me as proud as when I filmed a ten years reunion interview for my mentorship program. Being able to come back home to Philly to a program that helped mold my teenage years and introduce me to some of the people that inspired me to go into this field was nothing less than rewarding. That is one thing that I believe sets me apart from my peers. When I create my art, it’s not just about the money or even being to say I created the best-looking piece of visual art. It’s about being able to create a body of art that leaves an impact on someone for generations to come.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I definitely see a big change happening within the next five years with the film industry. Everything from the stories being told to the cameras they’re being shot on. The way technology is moving, it’s almost impossible to keep up with the newest anything. We now have feature films being shot on iPhones. Film is not a thing of the past, the past being only seven years ago.
