Daily Inspiration: Meet Kaila Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaila Wilson.

Hi Kaila, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My love of nails started when I attended Kenneth Shuler Cosmetology School in May of 2014. After graduating, I worked multiple dead end jobs while doing nails part-time. In 2018, I made the decision to leave my full-time job; this allowed me to dedicate more time to my craft. Luckily I was hired by a local salon. Working there helped me build my clientele and improve on my skills. Within a year and a half, I became the salon manager. A little over two years later, I made the decision to open my own salon! I opened ARTPOP Beauty Bar in July of 2020. Opening a salon during a pandemic was a bit of a challenge, but it was also very rewarding. My salon is my pride and joy. The fact that it’s a “pandemic baby” is a testament to my strength and resilience during these difficult times.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest struggles I’ve had to overcome is self-doubt. As a creative and self-proclaimed perfectionist, I was always really hard on myself. There was always a voice in my head telling me that I wasn’t good enough. Even with praise from my coworkers and clients, I still felt like my work was lacking. Over the last three years, I’ve finally gained confidence in myself and my skills.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a nail artist at my salon ARTPOP Beauty Bar. I specialize in acrylic nails. I’m known for my neat nails and my love for abstract designs. I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built with my clients. The fact that they come in and they feel comfortable enough to share their lives with me is one of the greatest parts of my job. I think what sets me apart is the environment that I provide. In my salon, clients can unwind and be themselves; they come to me for beautiful nails, but they return for the stimulating conversation and the snacks.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Apple Music is very important for me to my best in life. Music is one of the most important aspects of my life; I listen to it to help me get my day started and to help me relax after work. Instagram is a vital resource for me; I use it for marketing and inspiration. I listen to a few podcast but my favorite is Whoreible Decisions. The hosts have great advice and their banter is a nice pick me up if I’m feeling down. I also love listening to the Poppin’ Culture Podcast; it’s pop culture with a dose of comedy.
