Daily Inspiration: Meet Kaylen Star

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylen Star.

Hi Kaylen, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Although I did makeup for my friends in high school, my fast-paced professional story started in 2017. Shortly after my high school graduation, I started doing Halloween and Cosplay looks. My interest in glam and editorial makeup peeked so I took a break to study Special Effects makeup at what was formerly known as Pinewood Studios. This decision allowed me to expand my portfolio. In January 2020, I decided to brand myself by formally establishing Hoshi Beauty.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, but definitely an exciting one. After fully launching my brand Covid shut me down because people were not requesting the services of makeup artists. Initially, I was concerned. Later, I decided to overcome this obstacle by using this time wisely by strengthening my brand even more. I decided not to complain but instead figure out a way to pivot to another stream of income. So I turned to social media and started doing tutorial segments for my followers.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Hoshi means star in Japanese, which I thought would be a nice way to incorporate my love for anime/cosplay into my business. In addition, my middle name is Star, and that is what most people call me. When the pandemic hit and I could no longer take clients, I used my lockdown time to focus on how I could reach my clients from home. That’s when I came up with selling my lashes in Pokemon balls and Hoshi Beauty gained more attention! I named the lashes after anime characters like Killua, Todoroki, and Yumeko. My clients love how unique the lash line is because each lash has a personalized Pokemon-inspired card that goes with it. My creative marketing and incorporation of anime into makeup are what sets me apart from others.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The Covid-19 crisis reminded me to make the most of the time that I have here. As a creative, Hoshi Beauty has been my outlet to put out the fun things I have always wanted to see for girls who have the same interests as me.
