Daily Inspiration: Meet MaRah and Taz SWK

Today we’d like to introduce you to MaRah and Taz SWK.

Hi MaRah and Taz, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Wow! Well, we have been best friends since high school. We always said that we wanted to start a podcast together, but nothing really seemed to fit us. We knew that the people around us loved hearing us laugh and give our opinions to any subject matter that arises. During the pandemic, we found ourselves diving into true crime more than we already were. I ( MaRah) love podcast and Taz loves documentaries. This led to us spending so much time the phone – comparing stories and conspiracies – until one day I said, ” You know what? I think we found our podcast!” We were quickly getting tired of podcast that just stuck to a script or had fake gasps in an attempt to keep listeners engaged. We quickly found that our authentic selves coupled with the niece of Black murderesses was exactly what the True Crime community was missing.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No! The podcast just hit seven months and we are so grateful how quickly it has been embraced by fans both within the United States and abroad. Unintentionally, we started a full business that skyrocketed! We really learned how to navigate the lines of friendship and business partner. We also just had growing pains. We started this podcast on a whim, sitting in my closet and sharing the cheapest microphone that we could find online, we aren’t tech-savvy and was really learning each week while fans were demanding their Trie Crime fix. Many times we felt like we were racing just to keep up with ourselves. This was no longer a fun pet-project, it is now a lifestyle!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What sets us apart from other True Crime podcast is that we are specifically talking about Black murderesses. We like to say that our podcast is the perfect mix of true crime and social justice. We do not just tell the story where there is a “good guy’ and “bad guy”. We like to treat each case with as much case and insight as possible. That insight then brings humanity to the murderesses and shed light on how some of these crimes were completely preventable. We explore questions like, “How washes woman treated differently by the justice system because she was a Black woman from a poor community?” “How / When were they crying out for help, and how often were those cries ignored?” All these questions go to show that there is no cookie-cutter way of doing true crime, but three is a way to tell stories that will hopefully change the system, this preventing another unnecessary casualty.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The only thing that works is to be yourself. Authentically and Unapologetically. People, especially true crime fans, know when you’re not genuine.
