Daily Inspiration: Meet Monica Montgomery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Montgomery.

Hi Monica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
While attending Stillman College, I helped other undergraduates with their research papers by assisting with formulating thesis statements, outlines and convey theoretical ideas just to make some extra money to pay for books and food. For me, it was more like a hobby that challenged me to think outside the norm. Years passed and I had a friend that I was helping complete her graduate program and she encouraged me to reach out to numerous people that would benefit from my services and stated I should make it a business.

I brushed off the idea assuming that my hobby would not be an effective business and did not know how to be a businesswoman. After some consideration and wanting to talk myself out of it, I took a chance on establishing my business. I figured it was better to try than to never know its full potential and benefit. What started as just helping with collegiate work led towards creating resumes that actually took candidates into their career jobs. I did not realize people needed so much assistance, especially among modern-day professionals, with how to formulate and effectively express their potential to get towards an interview. After fifteen years of offering my services and five of those years as an established business, I have realized my true investment is in myself and not just my day job. It has been the greatest use of my time and talents. Almost fifteen years later, my business continues to expand from helping with papers to creating career based resumes to creating websites for small business owners.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not always been an easy journey. A major struggle was not having resources available at the time to give a step-by-step process of how aspiring, young females can start their business. I did not know where to start so I did a lot of research on my own, from creating a business card to market research for the best outreach efforts. Also, being a single mother was challenging as I was trying to believe in my own potential while raising my son to be his best. Creating a realistic organization format helped to equalize time between my day job, growing my business and being available for my son. Trying to juggle being a mom, a business owner and a better woman overall was not always fun, but it was worth the perseverance and sacrifices.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Currently, I’m a Relationship Banker at one of the top five financial institutions and have been employed there the past ten years. I always imagined being an attorney, but when that path didn’t go my way (selfishly), working in finance was my plan B. On a day-to-day basis, I help consumers and business owners with their financial health as well as provide long term financial growth. I’m known for personable connections that helps customers feel comfortable with discussing their financial background knowing that their situation can change for the better. I like to empower people with knowledge that will be beneficial to them in the long run. As a business owner, I’m known for understanding what clients are trying to relay in their books, biographies, etc, by listening to their thoughts and being open-minded to their ideas. I’m most proud of not being complacent and always looking for the next challenge to keep me out of my comfort zone. What sets me apart is that I let my work speak for itself. As much as I don’t advertise using social media, clients are always referring others to me based on quality work that takes their thinking to the next level.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important and heaviest lesson is that there will be plenty of days when I want to give up and just leave my efforts aside, but I push myself to continue with the hard work. Investing in myself is one of the main reason I continue to endure sacrifices and each time I want to quit, I’m always encouraged by a friend or stranger that my story continues to inspire them. I never know who’s watching as an example for their own life.
