Today we’d like to introduce you to Rodney Harris Jr.
Hi Rodney, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I had gotten baptized and I had gotten it to my faith heavily. I wanted to change my ways. In doing that, I had to start changing what I listened to musically because a lot of the music I grew up listening to music had lyrics pushing in such greed, sex before marriage, murder, etc. I started to explore Christian Rap and I was sold on it. It didn’t move me but I needed cleaner content that had that same vibe as what I grew up listening to. So I figured if I can’t find artists that I like then be the solution to my problem. I know what I wanted music to sound like and I had a story to tell with my mother passing at 12 years old it gave me a positive outlet as well. My older brother produced and one of my best friends did music at the time and encouraged me to get into as well knowing my story and what I was trying to do. Another one of my great friends engineered from my childhood and I had plenty of friends who were into photography and videography. I had a purpose, a team, and resources and I’ve been grinding it out ever since I did my first freestyle in the basement of one on my best friend’s house in 2018.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve had broken relationships. Death in family. Issues with jobs. I had a mental break in college so I haven’t finished yet having 34 credits left. I battled substance abuse. Carrying grief and trauma from my childhood.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an artist (R.j. Hots) that makes Christian live music on trap beats with a southern feel. I am most proud of the projects I’ve created and the performances I’ve done on stage. I believe that my lyricism sets me apart from others. Telling how to practically get through situations or what I’ve been through personally to help the next person who have went through similar situations.
