Today we’d like to introduce you to Jade Scott.
Hi Jade, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I envision my ultimate reality, I often think of the long road ahead, however I am also appreciative of how far I’ve come. From a young competitive gymnast through grade school to a competitive gymnastics coach in college, I then pursued a bachelor’s in Health Education and Behavior to establish my profession in wellness at the University of Florida. After graduating, I fell into the stressors of finding a job to support my immediate financial needs and put my dreams on the back burner for the following year. After a year of what I felt like was a waste of time, I became certified as a fitness instructor and sought an opportunity with a local black-owned gym, BAAST Athletics. I had no professional experience as a trainer, aside from leisurely “training” my friends when they agreed to workout with me. Yet, I told Patrick, the owner of the gym, that I was a certified trainer and inquired about renting space in his gym for my private clientele base. He graciously extended the opportunity and I started promoting my services via Instagram, handing out flyers at local businesses and Universities, and DM diving.
Eventually, my clientele began to build, and GoGetHer Fitness was born. However, I humbly remember days where no one showed up to my Saturday Bootcamps or morning classes. but I continued to show up every day. Building my own experience put me in a position to secure a job with the Wounded Warrior Project as a Physical Health and Wellness Specialist, where I currently create wellness programs for veterans in GA, MI, and AL. This job has helped me to grow within my own business as a wellness professional, increased my knowledge within the industry, and provided experience with helping people make real lifestyle changes. Once the pandemic hit, I was forced to innovate my classes like many in my profession and transitioned to Virtual Training. Since April of 2020, I have been offering Virtual Training Sessions and Meal Guidance, specifically towards women wanting to progress into a better version of themselves through health and fitness and I plan to continue my business model on the virtual track to eventually reach populations across the globe.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No. I do not know any reality in which creating a business would be free of obstacles or challenges. But for some reason, as a new business owner, I was fairly confident that my business would scale much quicker than it did. Up until that point, I was quite fortunate to come from a middle-class family, in which my parents were financially supportive as a child all the way through my collegiate career, and thereafter if needed. Unknowingly, this put me at a disadvantage from a business standpoint because I had to learn how to be a hustler. I had to become a GoGetHer.
I remember days where no one showed up to my Saturday Bootcamps or 6 am classes, however, I showed up every time just in case I had one client in attendance. I was not profitable for the first six months due to limited revenue coming in, and money spent on marketing, digital designs, renting the gym space, equipment, and apparel. I would print flyers every week and post them all over the local university campuses, hand them out at the mall, on campus, at work, and even go to different locations to airdrop the flyers to random people nearby. I also had to develop my confidence in creating workouts for a wide range of people on different fitness levels and deliver the content in a way that made them believe my work. I then realized what people meant by imposter syndrome.
We’ve been impressed with GoGetHer x Jade, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
GoGetHer by Jade is a reflection of my journey, not only in wellness but as a young adult growing into a powerful woman. I would love to say that I have always had a hustler mentality, but that would be a lie. After having a successful collegiate career, I experienced some major pitfalls post-college that forced me to level up or lay down. Instead of waiting for my dreams to come true, I decided to create them, and GoGetHer by Jade began to form. It started out as a fitness brand to help people reach their goals of weight loss, weight gain, or overall health by making a consistent decision to become a better version of themselves. At the time of it’s formation, I had no true brand identify because I had not uncovered my purpose or drive.
As I continued to work with my clients, I became captivated by the fire I was able to pull out of each woman to ignite something much more than a will to improve their health. I noticed the women became more confident and empowered in their everyday lives as their physical strength and appeal grew, and that is when women became my target audience. Physical health is synonymous with mental health, emotional health, confidence, empowerment, strength, courage, and self-love, and my hope is to help every one of my clients become more in touch with all of those factors. GoGetHer x Jade is about inspiring women to take bold strides towards the lifestyle they deserve, starting with their physical wellness.
I stand on the principles of going to get whatever dream you envision for yourself, and for my clients, that may translate as losing weight, gaining weight, feeling confident in a bikini or their everyday clothes, being strong, or just being healthier. Whatever that may be, I am here to support them. I am proud to be a woman’s woman because we need more of us in the world.
