Today we’d like to introduce you to A. Ruth Proctor.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Ruth Proctor is a small town country girl from NC that had big dreams. Big dreams to one day are in a professional leadership role. My plan was to conquer the world one person at a time. Initially, I went to college to become a lawyer but my senior year realized that was not my dream. Overtime, I realize that it was impossible to help everyone but I could help people that were open and accepting of my help. I begin giving back and throwing myself into work and being a leader came naturally. The main thing that motivated me was my love for people and wanting to help others. My children are definitely my motivation now and I want them to have everything I didn’t and more. Leaving my mark for them to model.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a long and challenging road to say the least. At the age of five, someone I trusted touched me inappropriately. Someone that was supposed to keep me safe. It wasn’t just that one time; it was throughout my childhood by multiple people. This happened to me- I know it wasn’t my fault. As an adult, it has been challenging in my friendship, relationships. Always on guard and that’s how I survived. My past has created huge trust issues. It’s not just men, it’s people in general. Childhood trust issues continued into adult trust issues. People who I was supposed to trust failed me! One way I survived this trauma is by becoming an advocate for survival and therapy.
We’ve been impressed with Building Foundations Together, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I wanted to assist a community that looked like me. My nonprofit, our mission is to empower youth. Building Foundations wishes to promote and enhance the lives of teens, to enable them to make correct decisions while broadening their lives through technical training, business leadership and opportunities to achieve their own success story. In our Therapeutic Foster Care program, we offer help with the transitioning process. We have trained staff that are able to assist both the client and the new foster parents with various needs. Common services include in-home and community treatment, group and family counseling, referrals to other social services agencies and assistance with understanding roles and rights as both the foster child and the foster parent.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
