Hi Ashley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When our son, Opie, was little, we had a basic, old-school magnetic letter set on our fridge for him to play with. As he got older, we noticed that even though the letters were meant to be a child’s toy, our adult friends and guests played with them more than Opie and the other kids did! They were constantly tinkering with the multi-color mess, arranging them into funny, and sometimes inappropriate, words and phrases that they could spell even with the limited letter options. The things they would come up with made us laugh on a daily basis as we walked past our fridge.
While I loved the creativity of the messages they came up with, I often wished I could give the letters a little bit of a makeover. I thought it would be fun to change out the colors as the seasons changed or to make the design a little more sophisticated so that it tied in with my home decor. One day it occurred to me that other people might be feeling the same way as I was. So after several mock-ups and trial letters with different kinds of materials, The Type Set Co. was born. Now we bring a wide variety of modern magnetic letters for adults and children to homes everywhere!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I don’t know any business owner who has had smooth sailing for the entirety of their business. There are always bumps in the road along the way but in my opinion, it’s all about how you handle those setbacks and obstacles. You can either freakout and cry “Woah is me!” or you can find the solutions that are going to keep your business going. Whether it’s production delays or material mishaps, the best thing I can do for myself and The Type Set Co. is to be prepared to handle any issue that comes our way. Of course, there are going to be those things that come out of left field and knock me off kilter a bit but the show must go on! One thing that I always tell myself and our employees is that “There are no alphabet magnet emergencies,” and that little mantra helps to ease the stress and tension we all feel sometimes. We are constantly trying to innovate and create great products that our customers will love and sometimes that takes a lot of time and patience, but at the end of the day, all the headaches are worth it.

I’m truly happiest when I’m at home with my husband, our son Opie, two mutant cats (bobtail and polydactyl), and our four Brittany Spaniels (Winnie, Chester, Rifle, and Rosie). It can be a full, and loud, household but it’s the one thing that always puts a smile on my face every day.
