Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Bui.

Hi Crystal, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my career in the newsroom, researching stories for news reporters, and moved my way up to report on camera. I eventually worked for six different television stations all around the country: Hawaii, Washington State, Rhode Island, New York City, Minneapolis, and now Atlanta.

I pivoted and started a strategic communications firm that I built from the ground up.

“Spotlight Communications Group” is similar to a publicity and marketing firm, except it isn’t run-of-the-mill. I tailor our work to make it unique for every client. Clients get customized communications packages and strategies from me and my team to make sure they stand out against any competitor.

My work covers branding, pitching clients to media (television, magazines, newspapers, podcasts, Youtube channels), and getting clients placed in those outlets so they get the publicity they deserve.

Once clients get interest from media outlets, I use my skills as a television news reporter to get clients on-camera trained and ready for the spotlight! This ensures when they are interviewed, they shine. I prepare clients for trick questions and talking points, rehearse their answers, and even advise them on what to wear so they look and sound their best!

My clients include public figures, entrepreneurs, organizations — such as non-profits, politicians, and small businesses. I love this work because when my clients are successful, Spotlight Communications Group is successful too.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
At first, people were more used to me working as a television news reporter that they were surprised to hear about the pivot. It took time to build trust with clients and for them to realize having a former television news reporter on their side brings the secret sauce other firms don’t offer. It’s almost like having a secret weapon: someone who was on the other end and knows what it takes to get on television or to be placed in magazines, newspapers, podcasts, Youtube channels.

My clients also get another advantage. My career in communications spanning more than ten years has also helped me build strong relationships with business leaders, public figures, and public relations professionals across the country, bringing valuable industry insight and resources to clients. While it took time to build credibility, I’m proud of the reputation I’ve established and those I’ve had the privilege of calling my clients.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Not every strategic communications company can offer the chance to work with an award-winning television news reporter. My having been a television news reporter who got to choose who I interview every day, I know the secret sauce to help my clients get on television too. I know what reporters are looking for because I used to be one!

Many publicity firms treat their clients all the same; they send out the same tired pitches and don’t take the time to customize a strategy that is unique for every client. They’re cookie-cutter and boring big box. I’m proud to say Spotlight Communications Group takes the time to invest in every client, to understand their goals — whether more business, publicity, money, or fame — and then my team and I make it happen!

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Thoughtful action.

Spotlight Communications Group takes the time to make sure everything we do is strategic and intentional for the client. I don’t ever pitch simply to pitch. I make sure that we connect only to reporters who are a good match for the client.

I don’t waste time. Clients can expect everything we do to be result-oriented. Spotlight Communications Group always thoroughly thinks through the strategy to ensure our clients get the maximum return and are given the publicity and attention they deserve.
