Today we’d like to introduce you to Ja’Don Johnson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I graduated from the “UNSINKABLE” Albany State University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. But, to be honest, accounting wasn’t my first choice. I was a biology major with a minor in chemistry because initially, I thought I wanted to be a pharmacist. In the same semester, I took both Organic Chemistry and Microbiology— BIG MISTAKE! During that time, I realized science was not for me. I changed my major 3 times after that! I majored in sports therapy, marketing, and finally, accounting. When I changed my major to accounting, my dad called me and said, “you’re not going to be a forever student so pick a major and stick with it”. I went to the career center and took a career aptitude test. My highest scores were in areas dealing with people and numbers. Since I was already an accounting major, I just needed to marry the two principles together so I decided that I wanted to open my own accounting firm. I later obtained my MBA, with an emphasis in International Business, from the University of Southern Mississippi. I work full-time as an accountant, specializing in Financial Reporting and Internal Audit for a Fortune 500 company. In my downtime, I was often preparing taxes and providing consulting services for small businesses. So in 2020, I turned my hobby into a business. I am now the owner and operator of LUXE Financial Consultancy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My favorite quote is “The best way to predict your future is to create it”. I knew in undergrad I wanted to open my own firm. The problem is I did not know how; I was not sure about when the time was right; and I did not know what it would look like. I didn’t know any entrepreneurs to guide me. I had to figure it out on my own. My biggest struggle has been with the small things that most do not think about. The devil is in the details. For example, making sure I have a binding contract, ensuring I am efficient during and after discovery calls, learning to be a salesperson, social media marketing, managing workload, and maintaining a work-life balance. Some of my family and friends are nervous that I’m on the road to becoming an entrepreneur. I am determined to show everyone I will be successful. I will say though, the biggest lesson I’ve realized is that I don’t have to be an expert in everything. Entrepreneurship is a constant learning journey.
We’ve been impressed with LUXE Financial Consultancy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
LUXE Financial Consultancy specializes in accounting (bookkeeping, payroll, etc.), Tax preparation and planning, business formation, and credit restoration. However, we go even beyond that. At LUXE, we pride ourselves on ensuring you have a pleasant experience from the discovery call to the end of our scope of work. If you need funding, we can recommend someone. If you need to invest, we can recommend that as well. We focus on educating our clients on the financial health of their business. We are here to help ensure you take your business to the next level.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
It takes a great deal of trust when someone allows you to manage and guide them with their finances. So as an accounting professional, I embody integrity, honesty, active listening skills, empathy, willingness to learn and understand, perseverance, and hard work. These qualities more than anything are what draw clients in and allow them to see the benefits of my services. At that point, they can be certain they’re in good hands.
