Hi Nyla, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always been extremely creative but I never considered myself tech-savvy. My very first flyer my college organization asked me to log on to Canva and create something for Friendsgiving. I have never used an online platform to create anything like this and I was completely shocked to see what I created. From there I perfected my craft and started doing logos and flyers for my friends. Once the pandemic hit and I lost my job a fire sparked and I knew I didn’t want to rely on a job to make money. My best friend TaTyanna constantly told me how good I was and encouraged me to take myself seriously and start a business. At the time she was the only person I knew who ran a successful business and she was instrumental in helping me realize my potential. I spent countless hours watching Adobe Photoshop tutorials on youtube and from there I opened my business The Nyla Co. in May 2020. I pride myself on being a self-taught graphic designer because it attests to my determination and willingness to learn. From there I started taking Social Media Management and Branding courses online to receive certification so I can best serve my clients’ needs and create graphics with purpose.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A major struggle I faced was feeling discouraged after going through months with no orders. The media glorifies being an entrepreneur but rarely ever speaks on the challenges it brings. After running through a dry spell it’s hard not to want to quit but in those times when things are slow and I am just feeling discouraged, I remind myself that it takes a strong person to run a business. I remind myself that I was given this talent for a reason and I have to be confident in my craft. My advice is to surround yourself with like-minded people who genuinely support you and to believe in yourself. My biggest tip for business owners when feeling discouraged is to create passion projects to remind them why they are so good at what they do. Above all, celebrate every success, even the small ones. Celebrating myself is what kept me motivated.
