Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen and Justice Smith.
Hi Stephen and Justice, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started shooting videos in 2016 when my friend at the time was doing music and wanted to save money by having me shoot his videos. He purchased a camera and we came to an agreement where I shot his videos and in exchange he let me use his camera to shoot videos for other artists. The following year I met my lovely wife, business partner, and co-director Justice, and continued to actively learn and hone my videography skills. A year later I bought my own camera and started shooting music videos as a secondary source of income. However, after being laid off from my job and not being able to get any responses from job applications I started shooting videos full time. At first, things were slow, but we stayed consistent, worked hard for two years, and began to upgrade our equipment. With the help of the upgrades that were made and the use of the many skills that we had acquired over the years, our clientele started to expand. When the business started increasing my wife began regularly accompanying me on shoots and co-directing since she already had directing experience from obtaining her bachelor’s in Theatre. Next thing you know, we became a dynamic duo and the closer we got the better we worked together on and off set. Since then we’ve continued to expand into different markets, diversify our portfolio, and strive for greatness in every aspect.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being self employed is not an easy task, and there were some extremely difficult times in the beginning stages of our company. Transitioning from a freelancer to a business owner was a challenge in itself because there was no longer a safety net. If there was equipment to be bought, bills to be paid, or any other issues that arose, It was our responsibility to handle it. We had to figure out how to market ourselves and our services, as well as how to effectively communicate with current and potential clients because our livelihood depended on it. We also had to grow accustomed to the financial instability that comes along with no longer receiving steady paychecks, which forced us to learn how to manage our money better. However, with all of the obstacles we faced building our business, one of the biggest challenges we came to face was ourselves. Despite fear and doubt, we had to learn to trust ourselves, our talents and abilities, and stay consistent especially when times were hard. See, most people don’t realize that they are in their own way, and it was that realization that became our biggest breakthrough. Essentially, we could name a hundred different challenges that we faced on our journey along with the solutions we’ve found, but the most important lesson we have learned was that we can overcome any obstacle.

Rz Vizions is a video production company that specializes in music videos, event filming, promotional ads, and much more.
