Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Since I was young, I’ve always been into making products for myself. I’ve gotten in trouble countless times in high school for using my mama’s expensive Shea butter, herbs, and oils. For a long time, I never really took it seriously and it was just something I would do for myself whenever I was in a financial bind or just felt like being creative. I was the kid that would go in all the fragrance shops just to spray and smell different scents or put on different lotions etc.
I officially started Sugar Lily in college in my dorm room at The Unsinkable Albany State University. I went through a bad allergic reaction and decided I needed to make myself a quick remedy. My roommates at the time and I decided to go on our weekly store run. There I picked up a whole bunch of items to make myself an exfoliating sugar scrub. I got back to my dorm room and locked myself in there for hours looking at different videos, researching different oils and their benefits. I found some mentors that have been in the health and beauty industry for years. They have helped guide me to which herbs and oils are best to use for different skin types.
I found something that worked and made my skin feel clean, smooth, and hydrated. Finally, something that didn’t have too much of a fragrance or perfume-like smell.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been smooth. A lot of trial and error has been made. Learning what’s best for my business and not for me. There have been some challenges due to shipping delays because of the pandemic and inflation. Let’s just say, “you name it, I’ve probably experienced it.” I truly love and trust the process that’s best for me. Everything will work itself out.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Take your time! Truly get an understanding of your business plan first. It is okay to work a 9-5 job and still run a business. Document everything. Open a business bank account so that you’re not always spending your funds. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small or big they are. Something I wish I knew before starting, It’s okay to fail. Not everything will go as planned. Remember why you started and keep going! Enjoy your journey
