Hidden Gems: Meet Emma Flynn of Commoner Design Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Flynn.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started Commoner Design Co. as a little side business while working in the corporate design world. I spent several years working on large spaces with large clients and forever longed for something more – to make design accessible to everyone + really connect with the people using the spaces. I finally made the leap to taking this passion full-time last year and haven’t looked back. I want working with me to feel like you’re working with a trusted friend, helping you put down roots, invest in your community + create something that is uniquely yours.

With an architecture background and as a certified interior designer I’m here for any size project you want to tackle.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Running a business?! Where do I even begin? I never imagined I would be running a small business and as we all know, we weren’t taught anything about doing so in school. I’m still wading through trying to figure everything out from taxes to payroll etc. but I have been lucky to have some amazing people cross my path. I have shamelessly asked so many questions to those who have gone before me and it has made all the difference. Hopefully, I can do the same for someone in the future.

As you know, we’re big fans of Commoner Design Co. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Commoner provides everything from a quick consult to a full architectural interior design experience. Hiring a designer can seem inaccessible and I want to change that. The way we interact with spaces has such an impact on our daily lives, creating a space you love with a little help shouldn’t be ultra-exclusive. I started commoner design co. to make working with a designer approachable + help you navigate your vision to turn it into reality. We have no fee or project size minimums + tailor all of our deliverables to each client’s needs.

What’s next?
I have big dreams for commoner that haven’t been put into motion yet. I hope to one day be a connection point for local creatives, work closely with makers + artists, + open a retail venue but we’ll see where life takes us.
