Hi Fitima, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my first business at the age of 14, inspired by my father who was a business owner. He owned a martial art school for 25 years and I was raised in that school and he taught me about wealth, how money was made and the philosophy behind Robert Kiyosaki (Rich Dad, Poor Dad). I started with my own cleaning company at age 14, then at 18, I started Fitima’s Special Event Planning. I decided to join the United States Air Force, but got extremely ill, so I can back home and started touring the country with my aunt and her cosmetic line right out of Atlanta, GA called Bovanti Cosmetics. Once I learned the business, I was able to open my own Kiosk in Durham, NC and expand the brand in that area. After years of working with the brand, I decided to enroll in college to receive my undergraduate degree in business, then on to get my MBA. Once I received my MBA, I started a T-shirt line called Native Chick Collection. Which was an attitude Tee line that spoke on all the drama and taboo topics that we did not want to discuss in the black community. I traveled with celebrities and did trade shows to promote the brand. It eventually turned to a full clothing line for men and women that landed in the malls and had independent distributors. Once I learned I could build a brand from nothing, I decided to write my first book on entrepreneurship and the road to success I took, but also all the pain and losses I suffered along the way. I decided to close the line down and focus on becoming a business consultant, teaching other small businesses to grow and bring a concept to life. I started FM Consulting Group and added a talent agency portion just this year, where I manage talent. I enjoy being a Business Consultant because it is great to see an idea being brought to life. Also to empower and motivate business owners to stick through the tough times. Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh No! I lost over $100,000 in business within the first two years of starting my clothing brand, your morals are tested, understanding your value, foreclosure, bankruptcy. Lost of loved ones along the way, competitors, finding capital for an all women’s business, losing it all and learning how to gain it all back.
