Today we’d like to introduce you to Javonna Waldon.
Hi Javonna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So I really started doing nails in elementary school, I used to get my mom to buy me the little acrylic kits anytime I passed one. I stopped and started so many times until around 2017 when I really started back focusing on my craft and since then it really took off. I was able to quit my job to focus more and decided to take things more seriously so I enrolled back in tech school in 2021 for my state license.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ll say the road hasn’t been easy because being an entrepreneur you’re solely relying on your income from the craft you choose… from inventory to clientele, busy days, slow days it’s really been a roller coaster but the key is to never give up.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
So I’m a licensed nail tech who specializes in acrylics and nail care. I love doing fun sets with 3D and I’m beginning to love drawn sets more. The difference between me and others is I actually care about the nails, how like when someone says a hairstylist has “growing hands” I see myself as the same because I take care of the nail beds and growth. I’ve had numerous clients come with thin, damaged, really tiny nail beds that have now become healthy growing strong nails.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For those just starting out, I’d say don’t give up. Take constructive criticism as good instead of judgmental or as if we’re just finding problems. You’re your biggest critic, I know I am always seeing where I could improve. Also, put in the work, nothing good comes to those lazy and not willing.
