Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakisha Goss.
Hi Lakisha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a Florida native who has made Atlanta home for the second time. When I was 13, I joined the African Caribbean Dance Theatre of Tallahassee and performed for ten years. My experiences with ACDT have been pivotal in my development as a woman today. The intensity of ACDT instilled in me a passion for professionalism, freedom of expression, an appreciation for other cultures and an innate appreciation for unique individualism through strict instruction, seemingly endless rehearsals, and demanding performances. These are tenets that I incorporate into most aspects of my life, especially my business.
In 2000, I co-founded Omicron Epsilon Pi Sorority, Inc., a social-service sorority for lesbian women of color. It was founded at a time when women were being blackballed from traditional collegiate sororities because of who they love. As the first sorority of its kind, Omicron Epsilon Pi Sorority, Incorporated serves as a sanctuary for lesbians who desire sisterhood within the collegiate dynamic. The primary impetus is to serve the Black LGBTQ community which is grossly underserved by traditional Greeks and the mainstream LGBTQ community alike. Through my involvement with the sorority, I have been afforded the opportunity to advocate for various causes that are dear to my heart like suicide awareness, LGBTQ parenting, and equal rights – just to name a few.
How you did you get started?
I worked with a travel agent as a personal assistant for two years, planning cruises for the LGBTQ community. Our first planned cruise brought together over 200 LGBTQIA+ individuals from all walks of life. Contributing to the success of these trips ignited my passion for travel planning. In turn, I have been coordinating group trips and events for community organizations I am affiliated with for years; becoming a travel advisor was a natural evolution for me.
How you got to where you are today.
I started my travel business in May of 2020, at the height of the pandemic, two months after applying for my passport for the first time. At that time, many schools and organizations were providing free courses to help break up the monotony of quarantine and I was fortunate enough to participate in the Certificate in Hospitality and Tourism Management course presented by Florida Atlantic University. Being a part of this cohort afforded me the opportunity to learn from industry insiders and get a better understand of the business aspect of travel and tourism.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I came into with a little knowledge of events and travel planning for groups so that aspect came easy but the challenges were getting organized and not overloading on information. It was hard to have clear starting point or path to take but I learn from doing instead of reading.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Kurated Travels?
I have always believed in collecting experiences instead of things and I felt feel that the best way for me to see the world, and help others to do so, was to become a certified travel advisor and be a walking example of my business’ success. With every curated itinerary, I am committed to cultivating luxurious experiences for my clients whether it is at my homebase of home in Atlanta or abroad!
What should we know?
My friends jokingly call me “The Plug” because I always seem to know where they can find people, places, and things they need. It’s important for me to know what’s going on around me; that’s why I decided to make travelling to Atlanta a focal point of my business. What better way to enjoy a city than by doing what the locals do? Greater Atlanta has so much to culture here and limitless experiences to explore. I want to ensure that locals and visitors alike have the same access.
What do you do, what do you specialize in / what are you known for?
I specialize in luxurious accommodations and experiences in Atlanta, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Luxury comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, and even price points. I believe travel is a luxury that everyone can afford. If you are looking for a romantic experience, I have experience in planning that as well.
What sets you apart from others?
I am fascinated by the people of the world. Different cultures and customs have always intrigued me which has fueled my passion to travel the world. It is through my business that I hope to empower others to see it as well.
What are you most proud brand wise?
It makes me most proud that my business has gained momentum from my support system and the best form of advertisement – word of mouth. I appreciate the fact that my clients, both friends and strangers, find value in what I offer.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Traveling! Each time I experience new people, places and things, it makes me feel more alive and brings me immense joy. I wholeheartedly believe that the more we travel, we grow into a better versions of ourselves. I believe that we learn more about the world and it’s people when we experience it firsthand.
