Hidden Gems: Meet Timothy Irving of The Original Irving Whiskey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Timothy Irving.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was inspired to start my own spirit brand after learning of my family’s history of making moonshine. In 1968, when my grandfather passed away, my eldest uncle took responsibility in supporting the family. Back then in rural Georgia, there were few opportunities for Black families. So, to supplement income, he began making and selling moonshine. He apparently was really good at it too! Unfortunately, his recipe and process was never passed down. With that being said, I wanted to create a spirit brand that pays homage to my family’s name which is why the brand is called The Original Irving Whiskey. It took a lot of sacrifice, failures, and money to get to where I am at today. Though it has been a tedious and challenging process, I am happy that I did not allow self-doubt to hold me back.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As I alluded to previously, the road has not been easy whatsoever. I haven’t had anyone to guide me in the process. Because of this, I have had to learn along the way, and there have been times I have made mistakes.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Original Irving Whiskey?
For our first product, we have released a straight bourbon whiskey that was aged for a little over two years using traditional bourbon barreling methods. However, what sets us apart from other brands is what we do just before bottling our product. We use a special filtration process that places emphasis on the sweet notes of vanilla and caramel to create a truly enjoyable experience. A compliment that we have consistently heard from our customers is how tasty and smooth it is despite it being bottled at 90 proof.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
That’s a good question! What makes my heart smile is when I see people taste it for the first time and they have that look of, “oh damn, that really is good”. That and seeing folks just vibing and enjoying something that I put so much into. It’s an amazing feeling that I hope to continue to create.
