Inspiring Conversations with Imani Bennett of Faith’s Purpose

Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Bennett.

Hi Imani, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born with eczema. I struggle with it to this day. Over time I found myself using lotions and creams that either didn’t work, required ample re-application, or simply smelled like medicine. Of course, when you feel like you’ve tried it all, you start to think, maybe I can do something better to fill the gaps. I’ve found that our bodies, for the most part, are already equipped to give us what we need and repair itself. With that being said, I knew I wanted to take a more natural route with my skincare, so like many of us, I went straight to shea butter.

And for a while, it worked. With consistency, I did see results. However, moisturizing my skin became a chore. Shea butter in its natural state is hard, super thick, and can take some time and effort to apply. When I initially started making my own body butter, I knew I wanted to take the chore out of self-care by manipulating the texture to become easier to use and apply. I also wanted it to smell good. Making body butter started out as a fun DIY that I did with my sister. I started adding my own smells and oils in my spare time and simply doing trial and error. After some research and makeshift focus groups, I decided to take this show on the road and create a brand, website, and some pretty awesome graphics to get the word out. I started Faith’s Purpose in the middle of the 2020 pandemic. I needed something to pour myself into during a confusing time, and from that my skincare company was born.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This journey was anything but smooth. But that’s not to say that it’s been a miserable one. This journey has been one filled with ample learning opportunities. In many ways, I’ve been an entrepreneur before. However, this venture is the first where I am providing a physical product and that I am building from the ground up. I struggled most with sourcing supplies. When you start a business, many don’t consider the cost it takes or where to get what you need. I was now in a position where I had to source everything from butters and oils to containers and labels, even shipping material. I had to calculate margins and shipping costs, calculate the benefit of bulk ordering versus retail, researching colorants and packaging methods, the list goes on. Long story short it was a lot of research and a lot more math. But I can say that I am at a point where I can see my work paying off. Of course, I am nowhere near where I want to be, but for only having been in business for six months, the progress I see is a motivating force.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Faith’s Purpose specializes in organic whipped body butter and body scrubs. We are looking to expand our ventures into cosmetics slowly but surely by introducing lip care products. We are often complimented not only on the quality of our products but by the effort we make to ensure our customers receive their products as quickly as possible by offering same and next day shipping. We pride ourselves on customer service. We make ourselves available to communicate to our customers as quickly as possible by answering any questions and concerns and, of course, in the rare occasion that an error is made, rectifying the matter as quickly and professionally as possible.

We are most proud of our customer feedback. At Faith’s Purpose, we are constantly seeking customer feedback and welcome both positive feedback and feedback identifying areas of improvement. When customers reach out and tell us how our products have helped to aid in relieving their eczema or keratosis pilaris, or how they simply enjoy not having to constantly reapply for soft skin, it lets us know that we are on the right path. Something readers should know about us is although we are ever-changing we will continue to supply our customers with the products that they want.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as a journey that shows you who you are and more importantly, reveals what you can be. Success is a continuous metamorphosis of self. I consider myself to be successful in this business not only when I reach a tangible goal that I have set for myself and my business but when I have learned to un-limit myself in my thinking and execution.
