Today we’d like to introduce you to William K. Boddie Jr., Esq.
Hi William, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always had an interest in the law since I was a student at Banneker High School in College Park, Georgia. I just remember seeing one of the greatest if not greatest Defense Attorney ever to practice law, Johnnie Cochran on television during an evening news segment featuring one of his many great closing arguments. Attorney Johnnie Cochran’s closing argument was so powerful, so moving, and so vivid in his mastery of the English language; that it felt like I could feel and even see his word imagery in his closing argument. At that moment as a teenager, I said to myself, “I want to do that. I can do that too.” It was then that the “Law Bug” bit me. I have had a deep passion for the law ever since that moment. Watching that segment on the evening newscast help to shape my future, develop my goals, and calibrate my drive for life after high school. I decided then my path was to graduate college, obtain a law degree, and pass the Georgia Bar so I could become a Criminal Defense Attorney in my home state. I have been practicing law for fifteen great years now. I am grateful for the journey of how I got to where I am today.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No, it has not always been a smooth road to becoming a lawyer. One of the many challenges that stand-out in my mind is the first six weeks of the first semester of the first year of law school. My first six weeks of law school is a complete blur due to the incredible amount of reading that I had to do every night to prepare for my classes the next day in Contracts, Torts, and Criminal Law. The reading of what was like 100 to 150 pages of law book text a night was brutal. However, I had a very motivational mother in Mrs. Gloria Boddie and a supportive family. I recall one evening telephone conversation with my Mother during that first six weeks; when she told me, “don’t worry about all the reading, GOD is with you and you can do it. You will make it through these tough times. You will get through this first semester and you will eventually become a lawyer.” Made it through, I did! I was in the top 18% of my first-year law school class after grades were posted that first semester. It felt exceptionally good and a big accomplishment for me to just get through that first semester of law school with good grades. I think that I adjusted pretty well to law school after that first semester.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
