Inspiring Conversations with Rachel Dorneanu of Sage Counseling and Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Dorneanu.

Hi Rachel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began my love for psychology in an AP Psychology class in high school. I then went to Kennesaw State University for a Bachelor’s in Psychology. From there, I gained experience in a few different ways to feel more confident in applying to graduate school and received my Master’s in Counseling from the University of North Georgia.

I’ve wanted my own business for a long time and now being licensed as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), I started my own private practice as soon as I could!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Not at all. Some of the struggles were not getting into grad school the first time I applied due to a lack of experience. I was crushed at first but knew I wanted to get into grad school to pursue my dream of being a therapist. I also realized I would need to make sure I stood out among the other candidates. Moving to a small town in Montana to gain that necessary experience in the mental health field was tough as well. I moved fairly quickly after graduation to get settled into my new job as a mentor at a therapeutic boarding school for teens. The distance from family was tough and I learned quickly that small-town life was not for me. Experiencing highs and lows in various mental health settings that really challenged me to work on my perfectionist mindset. Although I may want to do it all and help everyone, I learned how important boundaries are for myself and with others for my mental health.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sage Counseling and Wellness?
Sage Counseling and Wellness is currently a solo private counseling practice. I offer mostly online therapy sessions with outdoor walk and talk sessions once a week. I really enjoy the chance to get fresh air and walk around a local park.

I specialize in Anxiety, Assertiveness, Highly Sensitive People (HSP), Perfectionism, and Premarital counseling. My latest service is Sex Therapy for those that may experience pain with sexual activity, anxiety with sexual performance, and assisting with communication of your wants and needs.

I’ll be looking to bring on other clinicians to the practice next summer. For those wanting to receive mentoring in applying to grad school, hire interns for your practice, or build and improve your private practice, I offer mentor calls as well.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I most enjoy all the access to entertainment and different cuisines from around the world. One of my favorite places to go for fun is the Fox Theater. Love musicals and concerts! For food, I love going to Desta Ethiopian Kitchen for a more casual meal or Canoe for a celebration. For dessert, I love Big Softie for dairy-free ice cream. I least enjoy the traffic and constant construction going on in the city and wish we had a better public transportation system. It would be extra nice to have MARTA expand further north on Highway 400 to access more of the suburbs to alleviate some of the traffic.
