Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Manning.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ali. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Like many brands, they all start with an idea, a vision, or a dream. In this instance, one business was created out of a hobby and the other out of necessity. As a Food Scientist, it felt natural to research and formulate products, while the toughest part was understanding the nuances of developing and sustaining a business. King Status Grooming formed out of a need to remove odors from my husband’s beard. So one day, I thought to myself, “what about a beard wipe!” From the development of one item in 2017, came a five-product collection specifically designed for men with textured beards.
Remember me mentioning hobby vs. necessity? After years of working in corporate, I was set free from my job. An unusual yet, divine sense of freedom came over me at that moment, letting me know that it was time to walk in purpose. Just weeks before, I had spoken an idea to friends of starting a business as a food consultant, not knowing it was to become a reality only weeks later. I toiled with the idea of going back into corporate America, (even interviewed for a few positions), but knew it was the “safe way” out. As cliche’ as it sounds, having faith is about being fearless and trusting the plan that God has for you at that moment. After some deep spiritual diving and intense deliberation, I lept! Umami Food Consulting was created to utilize my passion for food, science, culture, and community. We help businesses strategize and develop plans for growth in the areas of project management, product development, branding & marketing, and more! I have the incredible support of my husband, which has sustained us during this time, and through faith and diligence, doors continue to open. I’m beyond grateful for this journey as an entrepreneur now with two sustainable brands.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The journey is rarely smooth. With no degree in business, but having a research mindset, I knew I could figure out many of the questions I had about entrepreneurship online or through my network. Having a network is CRITICAL, far more important than a degree in some instances. I also believe in the power of manifestation. If you have an idea, write it down, pray about it, speak it into existence, then move. When you take steps in a direction, doors will begin to open up, and the path will become clear.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Multibrands (King Status Grooming & Umami Food Consulting) – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m proud that with King Status, I was able to create a product people like and continuously support. It is an all-natural, handmade product line that stimulates growth, moisturizes, and improves manageability. Our products are only available online (www.ksgrooming.com), but we hope to expand into some stores and shops in 2020. King Status Grooming was my 1st attempt at entrepreneurship, so the mistakes and lessons I learned initially, have enabled me to approach Umami more efficiently now.
Umami Food Consulting encompasses my passion for food, science, culture, and community. I created it with the hope of helping businesses strategize and develop plans for growth in the areas of project management, product development, marketing, and food safety & quality. I know that my overall purpose is to service others and to connect people. Luckily, with this business, I’ve been able to do just that.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
The most significant barrier I’ve experienced when owning a men’s grooming line is if I’m “qualified” because I’m a woman. It doesn’t bother me, because we continue to provide great products and customer service, which far outweighs the criticism. Establishing my business as an African American, women, food consultant has been about laying the foundation, utilizing what I’ve learned and building relationships. I know that some barriers may come, but I’m more than equipped to handle them.
