Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Curtis.
Hi Brandon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been into streetwear for years now. It started in high school with brands like crooks n castles, the hundreds and flipping Js. As I transitioned to college I went to school for nursing because I was passionate about caring for people and I couldn’t see myself working retail or being a buyer or any of those type of fashion jobs. After my first year I started to get a lot of ideas. I wanted to mix my spirituality, social interests, and perspective on this journey called life into a creative project. That birthed my first brand Social Experiment Clothing. I made plenty of mistakes as you do as a new business owner. And that lead me to rebrand in 2020 to SociEx Studios. We are bringing attention to social issues and uplifting all divine beings we come in contact with through the art of fashion.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say yes and no. It was smooth in the sense that everything unfolded as it should have. But it’s tough initially getting support. Staying motivated after a drop where your sales aren’t looking like they’re supposed to. And then just the juggling of school, work, and life is brutal. But I would not trade it for anything the confidence you build through failure and hardship is unmatched. I recommend to anybody if you truly feel your brand is a part of you and your future then keep going. Take it one day at a time.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Outside of fashion I am a nurse. I’m going to work on a cardio floor in a well-known Atlanta hospital. I’m excited for that journey as well. As I expand my knowledge in herbal remedies and natural healing I plan on merging the two modalities to the best of my ability. Become a holistic nurse. I think that sets me apart from many of my cohorts because I am a bit more open minded to the ways we have healed ourselves for centuries, and I see the beauty in both.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
All 3 of my parents deserve tons of credit they were able to set me up financially to move a lot freer than some of my cohorts. They also instilled values in me that made me independent so while they might not agree with all my business decisions I don’t feel the need to budge on something that I see as valuable and necessary. My father also gave me a visual blueprint of being an entrepreneur as he was in real estate and wrote a book. My girlfriend also deserves tons of credit for being my rock during these times and a cheerleader to lift you up when you get down on yourself. There are also tons of other people who have supported me from the jump and I’m indebted to them all.
