Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Barnes.
Brittney, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a kid, many of my bonding experiences with my mother was baking. I’ve always enjoyed making food and other people enjoying it. I use to have parties and make a lot of food and desserts. My friends would tell me I needed to start selling my sweets. They wanted more access! I started taking orders at my husband’s job initially. I ended up losing my job one year which actually helped me to create Sweet Addiction. My little hustle turned into an actual business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When you turn your passion into a business it’s always a struggle. I’m in a field where I have to cater to other people’s taste buds and wants. I have fallen in and out of love with baking. I had to find balance. Feedback can be overwhelming sometimes. Everyone wants you to do what they think is a good idea. I had to create what makes me happy and not worry so much about others. I soon realize no matter what people will like it because I’m baking from my heart.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Sweet Addiction – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Sweet Addiction is a home-based dessert company. I vend and cater at music shows, art exhibitions, parties and celebrations. I specialize in gourmet cookies but I make all different types of sweets such as cakes, brownies, popcorns, etc. I love creating sweets and flavors that are unique such as my honey bun cake with cream cheese icing or glazed sugar pecan cookies.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
One of the biggest barriers is the work/life balance. Women need just as much support as men when it comes to dreams, goals and pursuing entrepreneurship.
We should not have to choose between family or a future career. workplace cultures need to be disrupted in order to break what’s become a recurring cycle of women leaders leaving the workforce.
